Snacks from your region

love all the food that's been posted here, have had most of it. but still have to try out idhli sambhar.

how is that white thing to tatse?

You haven't tasted rosogolla yet? :what:
Bengalis here gonna be highly offended

salty lassi is known as mattha/chaanch here :D

Could I add something: Lassi has the butter/malai blended into it so its thicker. And it can be sweet or salty. While Mattha/
/Chach/Chas
has the butter removed before blending.
IMHO, when a garnish of very finely chopped chillies/jeera is added to it , it becomes Mattha . While Chach/Chas is a plain light drink intended to help one to digest a heavy meal and feel cool besides (in summer).

If you visit, Bombay/Mumbai, then try the "Baida Roti" at "BADE MIYANS" in the by-lanes of Colaba, behind the Taj Hotel. It is (really) thick, stuffed with mince-meat (kheema) and has a nice coat of a beaten egg.
And there is a similar version (minus the Kheema) to be had at "NIZAMS" in Calcutta. Abir/Indian Jatt (may be some others too) will tell you more about it.

I AM in Mumbai ; work brought me here. And I was bewildered first time I went to Bade Miyan. A couple parked their S-class and came to eat from a road side eatery. I was like WTF !!! :woot:

Ma'm,
Those little white balls are something to die for! By themselves they are not so sweet, it is the boiled sugar syrup that makes them so sweet. And if you are diabetic, then simply squeeze a "rossogolla" between thumb and fore-finger (to drain the syrup) and pop it in your mouth. Pure Bliss!

Ask Jana about it as I presume since she had been to Tamil Nadu she would have tasted it ; Hot Idlis in Sambhar - makes your morning like no other. :agree:

You aint seen nuthin yet!
There used to be a disco in the Taj (don't know now) plus another in the vicinity (for lesser folk). People burned their calories there, then came to Bade-Miyas to hog a big bite. Very Nutritious an Economical.
Did you try "Gokul" on the opposite pavement? Noisy, smoky, crowded, booze by the quarter (powwa); but great Crabs and Fish, Mangalorean style.
Then "Olympia" on the Causeway itself. Great "Chaamp" and "Chicken Roast" while having Mumbai Cabbies around for company.

Do you mean the puffy solid white things? That is the "idly/s". Made of a batter of soaked urad dal and rice. Then grind in a mixer/blender. Leave overnight to rise. Then put it into a steamer. Voila, fluffy idlys.
Safe for foreigners who are susceptible to Indian/Asian spices and oily foods.

Now I am officially offended ma'am. :argh:

Taste it with Sambhar,Coconut Chutney and I bet your mornings will never be the same again.

Bade Miyan is getting costly by the day - when I first went there in Dec 2008, in the aftermath of 26/11 the prices were almost half as it is now. :frown:

BTW our favourite spot used to be the midnight cafe 'Bachelors' opposite Chowpatty.

lol

Well if you have a taste for Dhoklas then you'll love the Khandvi !

Man, sure I had a taste of Gujju foods when I was in Gandhi Nagar for my training.

Luckily the Andhra mess in infocity saved me and my South Indian tongue that longs for spice . BTW I love the way Gujjus make Bhel Puri, the awesomest I have ever tasted.

The first one, Kappa chips is a chips made out of Tapioca cultivated mostly in Southern India and Assam ,The second one is made out of a Banana largely found Only in Kerala and is called Pazam Poori.... The Third is Parippu Vada, made out of different pulses

I like the banana chips. Masala Dosa is good too, but only from select places, the Dosa has to be of good quality. I hate those flimsy dosas.

bhel puri, Papri Chaat are other items I'd try out now and then.

Not a big fan of the Vada, Sambar, idly.

Definition of snack is different to various people. For example we got Kabab Roll and Bun Kababs (not burgers), which don't fit into the same Snack or khana category.

Come to think of it, we've mostly only got Khabay, no snacks :D I mean stuff that is purely "Pakistani"

recently a friend went to india and got banana chips... loved them. they were the raw banana kind.

They are the best kind. But must be fried in Coconut Oil for a superlative taste. No other oil; no 'sarson ka tel', no peanut oil, no corn oil, no soya-bean oil!
