You could still see the black smoke. I remember this was an issue back in 2003. Is this normal ?

Sir this is not that smoke trail, which was the problem with original RD-93. If you notice this is the pic of low-level fly past. At this height and speed the aircraft is moving below its normal thrust. Suppose if the engine is running at around 70% thrust, more fuel is pumped in to keep the jet fly. Hence a trail of black smoke. As soon as the pilot will push forward the throttle this smoke will disappear. This is a normal phenomenon.
