The IQ and wealth of nations study does have some serious flaws within it (not one sample unit was actually measured directly, rather they used hotpotch of existing "studies" and interpolated a huge deal). Its why the average IQ of Indians in that study is low 80s, but the average IQ of Indians in say the UK is (actual measured childhood) mid - high 90s (though there could be a migrant stratification factor in play...so who really knows).

Someone needs to do an actual good survey, I want to see good data on it (for subcontinent population, tropical Asia and Middle East). We need more data, not less (which is what those afraid of the data for PC reasons want).

For Africa however, I believe its largely accurate on the general level given the studies done on long term resident African ethnic groups in the US....given its a long studied issue (before that got hushed up too).

Main reasons are their lack of homogeneity and the complete lack of industrial and educational base to start off from. As an example of what a black country is able to do, we need only look at Botswana that has been independent since 1966 and has an 80% Tsawana ethnic majority. It is a well run middle-income county growing nicely.

Let us look at S Asia to illustrate how lack of ethnic homogeneity can screw up development. Both Pakistan and India have been independent since 1947 and are still 3rd world. At least BD has the excuse that it had to start from scratch in 1971 and that is the reason why it is no better than either Pakistan or India. Sri Lanka would be even wealthier now if it was not for the India supported 25 year civil war imposed on it.

Yeah, we can expect an IQ drop in war torn areas such as Syria or Yemen.

I doubt many Africans got access to the the colonial infrastructure. Much of the infrastructure was destroyed in civil wars as seen in places like Angola. There's also crazy dictators like Seko Seko that sought to purge the country of its colonial influence.

Botswana's AIDS problem was certainly severe, but the incidence rate has declined. And the life expectancy has come close to what it was before the AIDS crisis started. However, prevalence rate is still noticeably high at about 25%. It'll be awhile before they recover. Another country that has shown great trends in development is Rwanda. It's impressive where they are now after the terrible events in the 90's.
