Kyiv has been devastated by Russian forces overnight missile and drone strikes, which have killed nine civilians and injured 63 others, including six children and a pregnant lady, according to municipal officials and local emergency services, early on April 24, 2025, several districts in the Ukrainian capital were the focus of the attacks, which resulted in extensive damage and flames starting in residential buildings, as the full extent of the devastation is still unknown, rescue crews are currently going through debris in five impacted neighborhoods in an effort to locate survivors who may be trapped beneath collapsed buildings.

The attack, which targeted strategic locations such Shevchenkivskyi, Holosiivskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Podilskyi and Vyatynsky districts, was carried out using a combination of ballistic missiles and attack drones, according to the Kyiv City Military Administration, around one in the morning local time, explosions were heard, and later in the evening, more explosions were reported, in the face of persistent dangers of additional explosions and building collapses, emergency personnel have been working nonstop throughout the morning to remove debris and carry out search and rescue missions, at least 42 of the injured have been admitted to hospitals, with some in severe condition, according to the Ukrainian State Emergency Service.

Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, voiced his grave concern over the number of civilian casualties, emphasizing that a pregnant woman and children are among the injured, he also cautioned that rescuers have been able to hear phone calls from victims buried in the debris, highlighting the sadness and immediacy of the situation, and that some people, including two children, are still missing, tarsh spread over the city has made rescue operations more difficult, and fires have consumed multiple residential buildings, causing damage to residences, vehicles, and commercial properties.

This attack is part of a broader pattern of intensified Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities amid stalled peace talks and ongoing conflict. Alongside Kyiv, other regions including Zhytomyr, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Poltava, Khmelnytskyi, Sumy and Zaporizhzhia oblasts were also targeted overnight, according to Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, the scale and coordination of these strikes reflect Moscow continued strategy to pressure Ukraine through sustained military assaults on civilian infrastructure and urban centers.

The attacks have been denounced by the international community, which has also called for increased efforts to end the conflict and highlighted the terrible effects they had on people, concerns about regional security were brought to light as Poland's Air Force hurried fighter fighters to defend its airspace against possible missile overflow, as rescue efforts in Kyiv continue, Ukrainian officials keep requesting support and humanitarian aid.

Emergency personnel continue to stay on guard throughout the day, knowing that the number of casualties could increase if additional people are found under the debris, the constant attacks are putting the fortitude of Kyiv citizens and responders to the test once more, highlighting the war continuing human cost.
