Cairo - Asharq Al-Awsat
Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi stated on Sunday that political Islam movements exploited the so-called “Arab Spring” to reach power in several countries, including Egypt.
He said during a visit to China that the power vacuum created by the “Arab Spring” revolts was filled by these movements that did not care whether a nation survived or collapsed.
Sisi was in Beijing to attend the China Africa business forum where he highlighted Egypt’s experience in combating terrorist groups and preventing the “collapse of the state.”
The Egyptian people chose the path of reform and steered their country clear off the path of collapse, he added.
Sisi came to power in 2014 in wake of popular protests that swept the country in June 2013 and led to the overthrow of Muslim Brotherhood President Mohammed Morsi.
Egyptian authorities accuse the Brotherhood and other armed groups, including ISIS affiliates, of being behind a series of attacks in the country.
Sisi met in China with President Xi Jinping and later delivered a speech at the Central Party School of the Communist Party of China.
Egypt’s presidential spokesman Bassan Radi said that Sisi detailed the economic reform achieved by his country, as well as various projects that have been implemented in the past few years.
He stressed his keenness on bolstering cooperation ties with China in various fields, such as politics, economy, culture, tourism and science.
He also underscored the importance of Egypt bolstering its ties with Africa, the Arab world and Europe given its unique geographic location and several free trade deals it had signed with these regions.
Sisi had kicked off his visit to China by holding talks with Xi on Saturday. The two leaders also signed five cooperation agreements.
The deals included cooperation regarding industrial quality, cooperation in projects related to productive capacity and a Chinese-funded electric train that will run to Egypt’s planned New Administrative Capital, said the official MENA news agency.
