China does import Russian weapons. Japan does make the F2 indigenously, and some awesome tanks. And you guys still operate F7s. Period.

F2 is a 60/40 split manufactured between Japan and US. It uses American weapons, engine, and etc. It is nowhere close to being indigenous. It is also a financial failure as it was a basically a upgraded F 16C/D that cost over 125 million dollars.

10 million for a tank will get you a attack helicopter in other countries.

Japan can make good weapons. Their problem is pricing them far beyond their capabilities.

Their weapons are actually "below average" in pure numbers. For example, their indigenous antiship missile ranges are only 100 km. Not the worst though, that prize goes to South Korea whose artillery explode when firing, killings its own soldiers.

In terms of cost:effectiveness ratio, Japan has got to have the worst weapons in the world.
