Simitis: Turkey-Greece war would last 2 hours

25 January 2012 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Former Greek Prime Minister Kostas Simitis has said that Greece’s arms race with Turkey would give the country no advantage in a possible confrontation with Turkey, deeming it a waste of economic resources of the crisis-torn country, saying Greece would only last two hours in the event of a war with Turkey.

“Should a war with Turkey erupt, Greece’s armament would be of no use. Such a war will be fought for two or three hours,” Simitis claimed at a conference organized by the Germany-based Heinrich Böll Foundation in Berlin on Tuesday.

Greece, the country with the highest military expenditure-to-gross domestic product (GDP) ratio in Europe, has in a way become a victim of its arms race with Turkey. Despite claiming that Turkey tries to provoke the existing conflicts between the two countries, Simitis said: “Greece should not waste its resources on armament; it should instead turn to the EU to resolve any conflicts. The EU should be a guarantor for Greece’s external security

Another enemy goes down. Bulgaria and Greece are both out of game. From what I have been observing, Greeks have not upgraded their fleet since purchasing f16 block 50 +, then their submarine deal went bust, even sold their Hellenic shipyard.

With the threat from west has been neutralized, This time, we should pressure Armenia to recognize our borders and withdraw from Karabakh.

.
i dont believe that it only will last for 2-3 hours.

Greece does have firepower... their air force is somewhat a danger for us.

Turkey has never been in a race with Greece in arms race. it's only the Greek governments imagination...

they have provoced us for years to take action. altough, it makes me wonder. where is Greece geting it's fuel from? i heard it was from Iran, but now since it has embargo where is it going to get fuel for it's army?

Bulgaria? they went down when USSR was dissolved. i'm surprised people looked at them as a threat. they will gain more from being an ally to us than neutral or an ally to Greece.

Armenia has taken land from us? a direct conflict with Armenia means a direct conflict with Russia. but a direct conflict with the "republich of karabagh" is not of Russia's responsibility. that means that Turkey can help Azerbaijan bomb those REAL genociders back to the shithole they came from. Karabagh belongs to Azerbaijan.

Simitis does exeggerate with his Speech !

But in the current Situation Greece will lack on financial Resources to fight a long War against Turkey, with it's defence Industry Turkey can put the Advantage to it's own favor ! If T-129, MILGEM, LACM, Air Defence Systems, MALE UAV, Spy Satelitte etc. entered in Service, Greece will have no more have a Chance against Turkey in any military clash. They want Counter turkish Advantage with possible Military Support from EU !

I remember ethnic Turks were forced to emigrate to Turkey in 1980 and 1990's. Before that I was not born. Then Bulgarian economy collapsed.

It was a threat during Soviet times, Bulgaria experience a severe demographic decline. In the future it may even import foreign workforce. It barely keeps it's army running. Most of their soviet era equipment are falling apart.

As For Armenia. It doesn't recognize our eastern borders. For them, the Gyumri treaty is non confirmed. In their constitution, our eastern vilayets, Kars, Ardahan, Agri are within Armenia, and Turkey is the illegal occupier.

I dislike Armenians most, for me they are the biggest threat, not Greeks. Sneaky people, some hiding their identity living amongst Turks. Above all of them Karabakh should be returned to Azerbaijan. When Russia withdraws from supporting Armenia, they would eventually give up their claims.

Greece not only has firepower, it has a lot of firepower.
And if you think Greece was not in an arms race with Turkey you are mistaken.

And our latest planes are block 52+. and Mirage2K -5 .

American doctrine was that Turkey will have the edge over Greece but not a decisive edge.

Greece has strategic reserves for (or at least that was the plan when I served) for a 90 day confrontation with Turkey.

Every little thing in the Greek forces is to counter Turkish abilities and forces, so in that aspect we are (or used to be) well prepared.

Also I don't like the fact that you think Greeks provoke Turkey. It is the other way around and with clear geopolitical goals. Let's not forget that.

Overflying Greek islands is not a greek provocation. Also although you may not like it, Greece has an airspace of 10 miles. The fact that Turkey does not recognise this space doesn't make Greece a provoker.

In actual fact, when Russian, French and American carriers enter the Greek FIR do so with explicit respect to the 10 mile airspace.

how come ? think about it.

Also Greek armed forces were not constructed after 1974 with the aim of defeating the Turkish forces. Such a thing is impossible by sheer numbers only.
The Greek armed forces are structured in such a way as to cause the Turkish side in a possible conflict the amount of 'pain' that will make the Turkish side back down.

A long drawn conflict between the two countries is not sustainable by Greece.

@amalakas,

The war would be costly for both sides destroying military capabilities of both for years to come. And Turkey facing other threats won't risk a war. Anyway if war happens, Eu and USA would intervene. Till they intervene, Turkish side may take a few isles or rocks ;) from you.

nobody can defend successfully 3000 islands

It would solve sea space and air space issues. Therefore Greeks won't provoke war, neither Turkey would, 'cause Turks need their army for eastern campaigns.

.
you cant say that it was the Turks that provoced the Cyprus invasion.

and no... how can a country supperior to Greek defence be in arms race? it's like comparing USA to France. you got something, but we have a hole bunch wich is better.

they teach you about a possible war against Turkey in Greek army?

ohh btw, who is the main source for Greek gas and oil supply? heard it was Iran

.
We have to deepen the economic ties of both countries to avoid any possibility of a war. Greece is probably our best neighbor with Georgia, it's in no ones interest to have a war because of some small islands and a few rocks in the Aegean see.

Turkey: We declare war our forces will attack in two hours.

Greece: We Surrender.

Turkey: WTF we havent attacked yet.

Greece: We surrender, we are now a subdugated state totaly under the control of Turkey................................BTW you now owe the EU €329.351 billion

Lol :)

Jokes aside, Turkey fighting Greece would be disaster for both countries. Both countries are pragmatic enough to know the outcome of such a foolish scenario, hence it is an impossibility. Turkey should instead help Greece in these difficult times, in the end we are neighbours and neighbours should help each other.
