Armies and its generally associated units DO NOT NEED any silencers for their assault weapons! However, for highly specialized ops such as HVT assassinations, behind enemy line silent assault by Special Forces etc, silencers are used on sniper rifles and smaller bore hand held pistols and even SMG's in order to prevent detection due to the noise generated by the fire. The new trend with some spec op units is to use highly accurate and deadly but completely silent bow-and-arrow guns!

I agree Xyon. And I think SSG uses H&K PSG 1 with silencers.

Supressors never are as quiet as people expect. Hollywood movies have made the expectation for silence totally unrealistic. But they do a good job reducing muzzle blast and making them hearing-safe. They also make it much harder to locate the source of the gunfire. But everyone still knows a gun is being fired.

Bullets faster than the speed of sound (most rifles) will still produce a sonic crack (miniature sonic boom) that cannot be suppressed, so these things work best on subsonic pistol ammunition. .22LR can be made air-rifle (or better) quiet if subsonic ammo is used, but in general, the average person is disappointed when they first hear them in use.

In the U.S. they are legal in most States, but it takes a LOT of paperwork to own one.

Yes! almost all pak defence units are armed with silencers and surppresors. ESPICIALLY THE SSG!

1. As a soldier it is horrifying . Who? From where?
2. As a platoon level commander its confusing , as the direction vector of shooter is unavailable.
3. As a company commander it leaves a big ambiguity about the operation.priority and real time decisions
Now we will think about two terms
Crack & Thump. and what they are.
When the bullet leaves the muzzle , its velocity exceeds the speed of sound , which implies that , where ever it passes by it will be generating the sonic boom. Depending on the size of the projectile (7mm /12.5mm) It is like a cracking sound , and the vicinity of the sound is confusing , being right left OR above .
This is the crack part of it.
While this projectile is traveling twice the speed of sound the sound of the fire arm is also traveling , but is audible with a time gap , depending on the distance between the sender and the receiver.

This is how the shooter exposes his location ( the thump sound comes from the shooters vacinity
reveals direction of fire as well as distance of the shooter) , and the evasive echelon initiates a chase operation.

Once again
What if the crack sound is iterative Eg Automatics Or Multiple & automatic being recieved?
1. If this party is in a trenched defence they will not known the direction of the attacker
2. If this party is launching a flaking manover the defended will not know where the monster is comming from
3. If the party is raiding a post the night watchers can be dispensed without waking up the post defenders
4. while collecting the information in some ones territory( patrolling) , it is unwise to get engaged in firefight , and the first round fired is a compromise of position .The flee back to the home location becomes mandatory
If the guns of this party have no sound They can stay longer , engage well and come back home unseen without risking there lives due to compromise.
5. Snipers No comments every one knows what they do and the odds that they face.

You are a company commander on the first line of defense.
You have plan A. if the hostile battalion attacks from the front trench layout 0 degrees with the horizon
you have plan B if the hotile atacks from the left trench layout 90 degrees to the horizon
you have plan C if hostile attacks from the right trench layout 270 degrees to the horizon
Then more plans with combinations of the above.
If your scouts are engaged quietly and your eyes and ears are gone
AT midnight. heavy fire is received . Only crack sounds no thump?
Only have to close your eyes and draw the picture of this defended locality.
This silent attack should should be of the Home echelon Hostile to engage. Other side

Guns Must be silent. sooner the better.

It is a fact , the sound suppressor does not make the fire arm quiet , but it depends what kind of a suppressor is being used and what is the design.
An example is the silencer drum of a 3 Hp engine , they want a perfect discharge of exhaust , so there are primary and secondary chambers with small holes for the discharge , yet you can hear a generator sound from 150 meters , which is noticeable as it is iterative.
Yet there is another kind of a supressor which was used in 1970 for sound suppression , glass-wool was used at the end of the exhaust , and it had much better sound reduction. while maintaining the easy flow of discharge.having a calculated bypass from the baffle pipe(glass wool wrapped pipe)
Off the shelf things are not for special operations , and has limited attributes .
If we want a Hollywood silence while firing a firearm Eg 12.7 OR a 7.62 we have to do the research tests and trials to make our needs filled according to our desire as well as our resource constraints. plus the atachment has to be light weight and of a manageable size.
A three chamber Suppressor with the following design
1. the first one with a set of silicon rubber rings for a length of 10 inches
2. the second chamber with a silicon oil soaked glass wool fill
3. the third chamber with silicon oil soaked glass wool.

This will make the Thump sound of the gun considerably quiet.
If we need to grow , we have to stop thinking China and Lockheed martin.

silencer weapon only good for very close combat and special mission. Because non fire sound suppressor device can bear burst of bullet. May be good for sniper shot. One bullet at time.
