What's new

Sick of coming last, India's state of West Bengal could soon change name to 'Bongo'

Not if it is called Banga
Still, this is the first time I've seen this assertation be made (the state leaders are doing this purely because they don't want to be at the bottom of the list).

I have a better alternative for the CM, which will solve her alphabetic conundrum as well as consolidate her votebank too, name it Arrbistaan.

No but how regions exist in the national anthem? Bengalis can take pride from that.

Punjab, Sindh , Gujarat and Maratha, South, Orissa and Bengal

'West' in 'Bengal' is not relevant today without an 'East Bengal'.
now thats logic
dont get banned bro
Be ready for war with bangladesh, this time it will be fought over name. Guess we can have pakistan as umpire.
nah ... we are fed up with Bengalis
This is a bongo

You can call yourself Bangladesh-lite.:D

Bangladesh-original would be more appropriate. However, I heard that BNP and Jamatis have some suitable names in mind for 'Bangladesh' as and when they come to power...!! I am sure the patriotic Bangladeshis like Lufy500 would love a name like 'ISEP'. :D

eeeehhhh aise original...speaking of luffy please do visit this thread ....we have quite an interesting new comer here.

Its nothing in the name. The real Bengal is in Bangladesh. West Bengal can change its name to Rarh. That is only unique thing about it. Other than Rarh, BD has all other important regions of Bengal, mostly which are missing in WB. Varendra mainly is in BD, Vanga mainly is in BD. North Bengal =>Darjeeling and Koch Bihar of WB demands separate state while Rangpur and its adjoining part Dhubri is in Assam, Sylhet in BD and its part Barak valley in Assam, Chittagong+Comilla is in BD while adjoining Tripura is a separate state. WB has little claim on Bengal.

The soul of Bengal is in Bengal...West Bengal.

You could have named your country as "East Bengal" like North Korea/South Korea. Why did you name your country as "Bangladesh"? Bangla is not only yours. Either rename your country as "East Bengal" or let us rename our state as "Bangla".

Instead of changing, why not reverse the name.

Bengal West instead of West Bengal or Bongo

Name change was suggested in 2011 .

Is the Bay of Bengal called the Bay of West Bengal? Is the Royal Bengal Tiger called the Royal West Bengal Tiger? Why then should this State be called West Bengal? Thus ran a recent campaign, which strongly advocated dropping the West from ‘West Bengal.' The name change announced on Friday has left people, who supported this campaign, and many others with a sense of despair, with some even seeing the entire matter as futile and childish. PaschimBanga, already in use in State officialdom, will merely now replace the English name West Bengal.

As many Cities and states have already changed to desi names , eventually , this too will happen . Below is a list of states and cities with old British name and new desi name . ( From Wiki )

Renaming in local languages[edit]
In the post-colonial era, several Indian states' names were changed. Some of these changes coincided with the States Reorganisation Act of 1956, a major reform of the boundaries of India's states and territories that organised them along linguistic lines. At this time, for example, Travancore-Cochin was renamed Kerala. Later state name changes include the reorganisation of Madhya Bharat into Madhya Pradesh in 1959;[2] and the renamings of the Madras State to Tamil Nadu in 1969, of the Mysore State to Karnataka in 1973, and of Uttaranchal to Uttarakhand in 2007.

Name changes have varied with respect to the levels of language at which they have been applied, and also accepted. Some of these local name changes were changes made in all languages: the immediate local name, and also all India's other languages. An example of this is the renaming of predominantly Hindi-speaking Uttaranchal (Hindi: उत्तराञ्चल) to a new local Hindi name (Hindi: उत्तराखण्ड Uttarakhand). Other changes were only changes in some of the indigenous languages. For example the renaming of the Madras Presidency to Madras State in 1947 and then Tamil Nadu in 1969 required non-Tamil speakers to change from an approximation of the British name (Tamil: மதராஸ் மாகாணம் Madras Presidency, then Madras StateTamil: மதராஸ் மாநிலம்) to a native Tamil name (Tamil: தமிழ்நாடு Tamil Nadu, "Tamil land").

In general, changes to the local names of cities in the indigenous languages are less common. However, a change in English may sometimes also be a reflection of changes in other Indian languages other than the specific local one. For example the change of Madras (Tamil: மதராஸ் Madras) to Chennai (Tamil: சென்னை Chennai) was reflected in many of India's languages, and incidentally in English, while the Tamil endonym had always been Chennai and remained unaffected by the change.
