Shortage of labor in so called "poor" India

Damn - Where is the emoticon for 'puke'?

Hahaha,
Bro, if that emoticon was available, this forum would be awash with it;)

On serious note, have any of you tried hiring a car driver recently? Unbelievable! I think it is easier to hire a neurosurgeon.

Till a few years back, my dad (in Pune) was paying around Rs.4000 / month to our driver. Now he is willing to pay Rs.10k yet nobody is sticking around for too long. One of my friend's neighbor even helped his driver buy a house, so he stays with him!

what i could glean from my indian colleagues is that india has a severe shortage of blue collar workers which explains the demand for illegal bangladeshi immigrants. However, it has a surplus of engineers and doctors......resulting in unemployement.

Mate it's not me saying this, it's the article. The figures are from late 2007 IIRC, but I doubt it was has changed much given that these things don't change significantly in 3 years.

Cell phone figures is not much to go by man. They are dirt cheap in South Asia. I believe more people have cell phones than toilets. Having cell phones does not mean you are in great condition.

One request to you just read that article again
That contain data from 2005 and published in 2007

Your friends, at the very least are pulling your leg. Unemployed doctors? No chance. Unemployed engineers? Even less of a chance. IT companies in India are swallowing whole engineering batches, even those who study other streams of engineering and they are still hiring.

The details of daily labor cost in my town
Construction workers
Skilled worker 300rs
Non skilled worker 200rs for men and 150rs for women
Their working timings 9:30AM to 1:30PM 30min break 2:00PM to 6:00PM
Payments on weak end
Agriculture related labor
For hard work like spraying fertilizers its 250rs
For women 150rs
In peak times we import labor from neighboring states
Here peak session is jan-april
Interestingly look at the peak time schedule
Morning shift 6:00am to 2: pm full shift full payment
Evening shift 2:30pm to 6:30pm half payment
And we have to provide shelter and medical assistance to the migrate labor
And there is computation between landowners to hold labor so we hired 3 men on
Yearly basis
For car drivers 6000rs per month and 100rs daily beta
For cook 300rs fixed no bargaining
This is small part of the story

By the way this is my first troll in this forum:wave:

So there is a discrepancy in money paid to men and women for same unskilled labor? Is that legal in India?

.
It is unorganized sector so there is no legally binding rules. But there are different types of work man and women. If work is light it’s allocated to women if it is hard like lifting weights it goes to men
Pay dependence on how much hard work you are doing

But the figure I mentioned was by Indian government. States generally don't lie about these kinds of things that internal issues.
Gov get these statistics from people. when a gov surveyor come home to get the income data of a family, people will never tell the real figure regarding their income. For example: in our five members family ration card our monthly income is just Rs 300. And we are paying our house servant Rs 4000 per month.
So as per gov records we are below poverty line. People even bribe gov servants to get a BPL (Below Poverty Line) ration card to get various gov benefits. I know several NRI's having 'BPL' ration cards in my place.

I feel embraced to say this but I am one of them but govt canceled it recently after verification we did this for subsidized kerosene

yup happens a lot in INDIA . i personally know many such people as well.
actually most of people here think that if they show more income they will have to pay more taxes even if they are actually below income tax limit. hence the income which is shown to government is much lesser than the actual income in INDIA. and doing that is not difficult atall. :coffee:

but that doesnt means we have eradicated poverty completely. many states like UP, MP, chattisgarh, oriisa where economic devlopement is less many poor people are without job even though there is shortage of labors in other more developed states.this is result of industrialization being limited to few areas. we need to take industries to undeveloped parts so that we can get cheap labor as well as eradicate poverty. :sniper:

I think it is legal because it is mostly manual labor that we are talking about. It is widely accepted that men can do more work (also variety of jobs) in fields where manual labor is employed.
But there is no discrepancy when skilled labor is involved (atleast from the legal and govt perspective), although you might see a minor difference in pay scales based on the gender in the private sector worldwide.

People, media international organization talk lot bout Indian poverty, While on ground I hardly see the poverty what they claim...

At Indian Metros, A person can earn 5000-6000 per month if he knows to wash dish and clean cloth..

In sub-urban area the situation is little different, but again they can earn 150 per day as laborer

my native state (Bihar) considered one of the poorest state... We find it difficult to find labors...

There are some tribal areas which are really poor, Can some one telll bout those places???

.
@alam... you raise a very important point here. See if you just look at the cities and towns, thats where most of the middle class and upper class citizens live. But once you go to the rural areas (not just tribal areas) you will see that a lot of people are really poor. And these include the people who are either unable to work (like children and elderly) and women who are left to handle the daily chores of running their houses. All these while the young and capable men of the family are off to the cities to earn more money. These people who are left behind contribute very less to the economy and when you distribute the money earned per individual (lets say by the guy who earns 4-8k in the city), it becomes a paltry sum.
