Shipbuilding to become largest sector after RMG in BD: EU Ambassador

CHITTAGONG, Feb 5: European Union (EU) Ambassador William Hanna said the shipbuilding industry in Bangladesh is moving forward aggressively to become the second largest export earner after the apparel sector of the country.
He said that Bangladesh has been better known for its apparel production and export in the global arena but the world now knows that it is a shipbuilding nation as well and the ship builders are moving rapidly onward, helping diversification of the industry and its export.
"The good prospect of ship building industry has helped attract foreign investors in the sector including the European Union," he said at the press briefing organised at local ship building industry FMC Shipyard in Chittagong.
The EU ambassador arrived Chittagong on a two-day visit Sunday. The EU delegation headed by Mr Hanna also visited Western Marine Shipyard on the south bank of the river and held meeting with directors of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) during the visit.
Western Marine Shipyard is going to deliver two vessels - MV ISEFJORD and Stella Atlantic tomorrow (Wednesday) to its clients at Chittagong Boat Club in the city and Commerce Minister GM Quader will attend the function as the chief guest while Danish Ambassador to Bangladesh Svend Olling will address as the special guest.
He visited FMC Shipyard to see the progress of building works of 25 pontoon gangways there. EU had placed orders in September 2012 for pontoons with FMC and the pontoons now being built are expected to be handed over to East and West Forest Department of Sundarbans in Khulna and Bagerhat shortly to help conserve the biodiversity of the mangrove forest.
Emphasizing on the importance of conservation of wetlands EU ambassador Mr. Hanna said the resources of the country's wetland should be used properly. The convention for wetlands and water management highlights integration of policy approach on water and wetland management together, which is very much needed to save the water bodies from degradation, he observed.
Trade advisor of European Union delegation to Bangladesh Zillul Hye Razi, chairman of the FMC Shipyard Mirza Ayub Baig, managing director Yasin Chowdhury and president of Chittagong Press Club Ali Abbas also spoke at the press meet.
FMC Shipyard entered into the ship building industry only two years back but it has been able to grow faster than expected as the yard has shown its ability to build up cruise ship for tourism, fishing trawlers and oil tankers.
Meanwhile, the yard is building two container ships and 12 oil tankers for some local private enterprises. The 144 TEUs (twenty foot equivalent units) capacity container vessels will operate in the inland water routes to carry containers from Chittagong Port to Pangaon Container Terminal in Narayangonj.
Eight local companies have placed orders for 12 oil tankers of 1600 tonnes capacity at the rate of Tk 130 million each organizers said adding that currently seven oil tankers are being built in the shipyard. The oil tankers are expected to be delivered to the owners within next few months.
"This is for the first time in Bangladesh that any shipyard is going to deliver as many as 12 oil tankers to different local buyers together. The tankers will carry fuel to different destinations from the oil installations at Patenga of Chittagong," said FMC MD Yasin Chowdhury.
