Ship-breaking yard approved for Gwadar

Prime Minister Imran Khan has approved establishing ship-breaking yard in Gwadar and a policy board for the same is being formulated.

This was announced during a high-level review meeting on the subject, chaired by Chief Minister Balochistan and attended by Federal Minister for Defence Production Zubaida Jalal and Finance Minister Asad Umar.

The meeting was informed CM Balochistan would also be a member of this policy board.

The PC1 document of Gwadar Ship-breaking Yard was presented in 2007 but could not proceed due to lack of interest by successive governments.

Now prime minister has approved the project on a partnership basis with the induction of manufacturing, training workshops, and parking stations.

“The government will welcome all projects in the better interests of people of the province.” CM Balochistan said, lauding the centre’s initiative.

The project is expected to fulfil the country’s shipping needs while also creating job opportunities for the local population.

The meeting was also briefed regarding the project completion and land allocation for the ship-breaking yard.

The finance minister said, “All decisions regarding Balochistan and Gwadar would be made with the consultation of the provincial government,” he assured.

The meeting unanimously agreed upon that approval of Gwadar Master Plan and other affairs would be inked jointly by federal, provincial governments as well as all the stakeholders.

. . .
Ship breaking should not be allowed in Gwadar. Ship breaking has a significant negative environmental impact. It destroys the coastal areas with toxic chemicals and waste products. It is a dangerous job and usually outsourced to 3rd world countries.

Gwadar's coastal environment should be protected and eco-friendly industries should be approved.

I am against this move.

Ship breaking may create a lot of low end jobs but it remains hazardous for the employees as well as the country.
Propper waste management and free health inssurance should apply at all times.

Ship breaking is a very good business for the countries having cheap manpower. It generates big employment. Veey good for Pakistan.

We too have the biggest in the world in Bhavnagar.

This is the first necessary step. The next is steel mills based on the raw material from these ship breaking yards. The outputs from the steel mills will support the construction boom as well as the shipyard and other downstream industries.

There is planned ship yard as well
Wait, so are they talking about breaking ships like they do in Bangladesh or building ships? Cause if they are doing that Bangladesh thing then goodbye visually appealing city of gawdar and hello dump.

Most of the oil is already removed from ships and they are towed for deassembly my only wish is the factory setup should be 50-60 km outside of main city area as it destroys the beauty of city
I want it to be modern like the ones in Italy. With actually dismembering cranes and workshops. I dont want them to run the ships to shore and then people climbing them with hammars. That would destroy the cities reputation.

I agree 100%

Ship breaking has a significant adverse environmental impact.

Gwadar should be developed to utilize it's natunat beauty for eco-tourism and not for 3rd world pollution industrial development.

There is nothing wrong with breaking yard ... It is good industry in Pakistan .. We already have 1 in Gadani which is far away from city .. Gwadar one will be at distance from city as well .. Even western countries have ship breaking industry

The first paragraph of the story says that a policy board will also be formulated. So let’s hope the policy will cover the environmental and visual aspects, in addition to the economic.
