Sherman cancels Khaleda meet

It sounds like this low life under secretary Wendy Sherman had an AGENDA. She definitely sounds PRO AWAMI LEAGUE supporter. Bangladesh people should send her A$$ packing back to Washington DC.

She claims it is not for her to decide yet that is precisely what she is doing. She is interfering in the internal politics of Bangladesh and picking sides.

Strikes are ruining the country. They are talking against the strikes not taking sides. But our leaders never understood the interest of the country :undecided:
I welcome those US officials.

US roots against hartal
Visiting top official cancels Khaleda meet, deplores cycle of shutdown; Powell too did not meet Hasina on similar grounds in 2003

The hartal appeared unexpected.

Ugh...why do people still commit to hartal? It is an outdated colonial-era approach. Under such conditions, hartals won't help solve anything. They should understand that.

The US seems to have been guided by AL propaganda. The BNP PR machine is useless. I asked about this to someone close to the US Embassy and they concluded that the State Department is under the impression that the AL wants to have dialogue but the BNP is reluctant. This is a completely wrong assessment. The AL is preventing any form of dialogue due to its repressive policies upon the opposition.

I think hartal is a legitimate tool of protest where the national interest and sovereignty is at stake. Unfortunately the BNP is not presenting it as such.

My Friend, you are a lot closer to ground reality than I am so you are in a better position to judge.
All I am saying is that this Awami League Govt. is not conciliatory in its approach either and wants to rule with a heavy hand almost in a fascist manner. Judging from the PDF threads , large number of Bangladeshi people are very unhappy about AL cowtowing to India and letting India run roughshod with "Bangladeshi Sovereignty".

The American undersecretary had no business cancelling a scheduled meeting strike or no strike. Whether strike is good , bad or ugly is Bangladeshes internal matter and our American Govt has no business in interfering in such matters.

Shamsher Mobin Choudhury and Sabihuddin Ahmed as advisor are worthless and should be kicked out long ago. It is utter failure of BNP and even more unfortunate for general mass in Bangladesh that opposition party privately and publicly failed to deliver the message that when opposition and people in general are victim of regime brutality and killings, western stand for exerting pressure on opposition on “shut down” is not only far out of place but also strengthening hand of brutal and oppressive regime.

BUT it is also true US does not need BNP version of the information to understand autocratic and opressive situation, US has detail information about what Awami League atrocities and what it is doing to prevent caretaker govt. What I understood is US still conducting its policy doctrine on Bangladesh through Delhi. And we all aware active indian involvement in keeping Awami League subservient regime at any cost. US tone and noise about shutdown clearly directed to subdue already weaken opposition and oppressive Awami League regime is direct beneficiary of it. US is already pretending not seeing mass public anger against the Awami League regime. As such question is even if BNP communicated right message, would that be matter? Most likely not.

Fact is thus far BNP is wrongly advised that US and western countries will throw their weight behind caretaker govt demand for election but that is already proven to be dead WRONG; US or western govt would do no such thing while Awami League in power. In such situation BNP has to alter its strategy - not looking at US and west but go back to source of real power that is people. To the end US will side only with winning side, period.

Hartal in Bangladesh is not only to corner the ruling party, it is also to boost the moral of the opposition supporters. Hartal helps the Opposition to organize before the election.

Last time, it was BNP that threw challenges one after another to the then Opposition AL and the latter kept on staging Hartal and burning the buses.

This time, it is AL which is throwing issues one after another that is emboldening the position of BNP. BNP was almost disorganized, but AL stupidity has been a bonanza to the BNP leadership. People are now flocking to it.

It is time to shun hartal, i agree with ms. sherman. My business is tanking.

Your business will not get to its potential unless you see through the root cause. Hartal is not the root cause but caretaker govt is root cause of the problem. You businessman and urban elites should exert pressure to the source of the real problem - that is towards Awami League regime which canceled the caretaker govt. Unfortunatey businessman and urban elites type of thinking thrown BNP out of its political root and track.

..........................its not all what it seems......:pissed:....i will still vote for BNP, too many hartals. Shipments can't go through. Its time you reimburse me.

Is not the US State Department informed about why there has been a series of shutdowns in Bangladesh? Do they not know that more than 300 people have been killed in the last four months from police, BDR and RAB shootings? Are they unaware that thousands of opposition activists and organizers have been abducted and murdered in the last four years? What exactly does the US Embassy do in Bangladesh?

As long as USA gets what it wants to their point of view its justice, no need to get surprised. I am more concern about USA's involvement in Bangladesh than the political problems. AL & BNP's can only do a certain level of damage to the country , both of them fear public reaction so there is always a limit. But involving with USA is like opening Pandora's Box, hope AL will not make that kind of mistake.

Great post, indeed. U have summed it up well except advocating the removal of Shamsher Mubin Chow, IMO. Anyway, that was corrected in the 2nd paragraph and the conclusion was right as well, IMO. I guess BKZ would take the right course of action around this time.

BRO, Let all the shipments get piled at CTG port and be eaten up by mice. With the destruction of RMG's export, many lost values and morals would reshape the society back to its original form IMO. We need prosperity but not by the cost of deen and values. With the surge of RMG's export, the most primitive organization of our society, i.e., the family has been falling apart. Thus bastardization, de-francization, rootless ness are becoming pandemic. We don't need it with the tradeoff of $$, the direct beneficiary of which are new capitalists that are creating new form of class struggle in BD.

Message for U, the day SKH pointed her finger on JI's minister as Talibs; She unknowingly entered on hegemonic periphery of empire on that same day, now go figure...

I am more concerned with Indian and Russian involvement which has given the AL confidence to kill thousands of people in 4 years with impunity.

Three US dignitaries are simultaneously visiting Bangladesh. Two Asstt. Secretaries (State Ministers) and one Senator. I think, the timing of these visits have been arranged by the US govt to re-assure BD of its commitments towards the latter when it is under the shadow of fear of its economic future initiated by the two consecutive accidents in the garments sector.

These visits also are partially targeted towards the US importers who faced public outcry in their home country after the accidents for which they themselves are hardly responsible. Now the importers will certainly remain in this country because their govt is with them although the home public are cursing them.

Anyway, I believe their visits are not to solve domestic political issues, but is about the survival of BD as an exporter of apparels and its subsequent industrialization. I am expecting a great future for BD after seeing the depth of US commitment to the well being of this country.
