In Islamic marriage the girl usually get what ever Mahr she wants provided the groom can afford it.... and the groom isn't entitled to mahr only female.... In India is the opposite lol.

Yes IN ISLAM - in fact the compulsory bit is only Nikkah and Valima...rest comes from the culture/ tradition of the land and you will see it different in different "Muslim" countries!

Nikkah is the marriage/ signing of the marriage certificate followed by a doa/ supplication to bless the groom and bride

Valima is the wedding reception given by the groom to introduce the bride to his place/ people/ home/ family

Each can be small or big....depending on how much one can afford!

OP is pointing out the stupid level of "show off" habit/ culture where they show off/ announce how much they are giving!

In Islam the fard part of the wedding is the nikkah. The walima is a sunnah, the purpose of which is to let the community know about the wedding. Everything else is customs. Some customs are halal, some are haram. We need to use our heads about what is beneficial to us and to wider society.
For example, the use of Mendhi in weddings is not limited to India/Pakistan alone, it's used across the middle east, asia and north Africa. Only in Pakistani weddings do we see women lighting candles and burning each others dupattas/hair extensions in the process, in some sort of attempt to include the hindu traditions they see on ZeeTV.
