LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said the Abbottabad incident sent a wave of grief and indignation across the country, which even after 63 years of its inception is perceived as not completely independent and self-sufficient.

“There exists a perception that real independence has not been achieved yet and as a nation we are being subjected to dishonour and humiliation for a paltry sum of money,” the CM said addressing the awards ceremony for position-holders in speech, essay writing, sports and art competitions at the provincial level at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat on Sunday. “How can recipients of dollars dare to disobey the orders of those they get money from? Economic and political independence in the real sense can only be achieved by turning down foreign aid.”

The chief minister said it was high time national resources were developed and the habit of begging from others given up. “We will continue to struggle for national prosperity and the survival of this country till our last breath,” he added. “This is not the Pakistan for which a heroic struggle was waged by Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah; Jinnah’s Pakistan has been defaced in the last 63 years. It is now time to take guidance from Misaq-Madina and follow the principles of Quaid-e-Azam and Allama Muhammad Iqbal and achieve self-reliance and regain the lost status of Pakistan,” he added.

Referring to the content of the students’ speeches, he said the comprehensive picture of Pakistan drawn by the students was reflective of the fact that the younger generation was fully aware of the problems and keen to salvage the country. He said he was happy that the youth were infused with passion and enthusiasm, which meant the future of the Pakistan was bright.

“Talent is a gift of Allah, which is evident from the better standard of speeches delivered by students of Daanish Schools and far-flung areas as compared to students from major cities and prestigious educational institutions,” the CM said.

He said speech, essay writing, sports and art and craft competitions were being held in Punjab for the last three years to polish the talent of students but that prize money had been reduced due to the floods last year. However, he said, the amount of the cash prizes would be increased from next year and participants of essay writing, speech, sports and art and craft competitions would be taken to Murree like position-holders in academic activities.

The chief minister also awarded prizes to position-holders. Senior Advisor Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khan Khosa, Provincial Minister Mian Mujtaba Shuja ur Rehman, Punjab Education Foundation Chairman Raja Muhammad Anwar, Punjab Educational Endowment Fund Vice Chairman Dr Amjad Saqib, MNAs, MPAs, vice chancellors of various universities, intellectuals, writers, government officers, students and their parents also attended the ceremony.
