Senator Bernie Sanders Praises China for Lifting ‘People Out of Extreme Poverty’

Senator Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) on Monday doubled down on his praise of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, and added praise for aspects of the Chinese authoritarian regime.

“Truth is truth. All right?” Sanders said at a CNN town hall event when challenged on his previous praise for Castro’s regime. “If you want to disagree with me, if somebody wants to say that—and by the way, all of the Congress people you mentioned just so happen to be supporting other candidates…but you know, the truth is the truth. And that is what happened on the first years of the Castro regime.”

Sanders then expanded his comments on Cuba to include praise of China.

“China is an authoritarian country, becoming more and more authoritarian,” Sanders said. “But can anyone deny, the facts are clear, that they have taken more people out of extreme poverty than any country in history?”

A lot of Chinese are still poor.....China has lifted its citizens out of extreme poverty, yes that's commendable but we all know the costs too....and culturally, many can argue that Chinese are still "poor" (old habits die hard).

In terms of morality, quite bankrupt if I may say so myself.

Question: Will you recognize & pressure China to stop discrimination against the Uyghur Chinese minority?

Bernie: This is not just discrimination, it's a lot more than that all of you know we know that China has thrown about a million Muslims behind bars....... they call them educational camps....well it's a funny kind of school when you have barbed wire surrounding that school.....so the answer is yes, we'll condemn human rights violation including that one in China.

Rumors are something that are not verified, established facts are some facts that no one can deny, even from people who hate you.

American politicians are not known for being friendly to China, but still something about China that not even a single US politician can deny.

Turkey & Indonesia or/& Malaysia has spoken up....so have many Muslims living in Pakistan, abroad and in many other places (civilians).

Don't expect the public to have similar opinions as their govt.....you can see that yourself here on PDF. Many Muslims condemn the Uyghur persecution while many others either support China or stay mum about it....which is hypocritical seeing as how we (Pakistanis) officially support & have supported many Muslims (like Kashmiris, Rohingya, Palestinians & Bosnians) who are being or/& have been persecuted.

Please accept the fact,no even one Mulsim country joined the west to condemn China over Xinjiang, including Turkey, and many Muslim countries signed a letter to support China. So this issue is not universally accepted as you claimed.

What document? Reports range from 1 million to 3 million, can you tell me where they got those numbers ?and how many deaths? How many Uighurs organs were taken and how many Uighur women were forced to sleep with Chinese men?

if your politicians are scared, then you deserve it. Pakistani politicians aren't Pakistanis? They were airdropped from China or US? They're aliens from Mars?
