Senate seeks report on PIA crew ââ¬Ëbeard banââ¬â¢
ISLAMABAD: The Senate deputy chairman has summoned a report from the defence minister after Pakistan International Airlines staff with beards were allegedly sent on forced leave.
According to Dr Khalid Soomro, the PIA management sent crew members with beards on forced leave from November 21. The chair asked the defence minister for a report on the issue.
The Senate, which reconvened on Monday after a two-day break, also discussed the air strike on a madrassa in Bajaur, the alleged abduction of Baloch youths by secret agencies, petroleum prices and nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khanââ¬â¢s health.
About Bajaur, opposition senators said there was now little doubt that the Americans had actually bombed the seminary and the government had claimed responsibility to save face. It had thus failed to protect Pakistanââ¬â¢s sovereignty, they said.
They challenged the government claim that it had monitored the madrasaa for over a year before launching the operation, saying that if that were true, the government would have taken the legal course of arresting the alleged militants inside the seminary instead of resorting to ââ¬Åbrutal extra judicial killingââ¬Â. They demanded a parliamentary fact finding mission be sent to Bajaur.
Senators from the MMA and PML-Nawaz also termed the Bush regime ââ¬Åthe most evil regime in the history of mankind after the Nazisââ¬Â. Earlier, senators from Balochistan protested the alleged abduction of Baloch youths by secret agencies. They claimed the agencies kept them in illegal confinement for years without telling their families, and denied detaining them when asked in court. The situation is fuelling anti-Pakistan sentiment in Balochistan, they warned.
Ruksana Zubairi of the PPPP and Professor Khurshid of the MMA called for a discussion on the governmentââ¬â¢s refusal to reduce oil prices after their reduction in the international market. Dr Sher Afgan objected that the issue could not be raised as it was subjudice.
Professor Khurshid on a point of order said that the family of Dr AQ Khan had contradicted government statements that he had fully recovered from cancer surgery. He said a group of senators should be allowed to visit the nuclear scientist.
Online adds: Jan Mohammad Jamali, the Senate deputy chairman, directed Interior minister Aftab Sherpao to explain why the Asr azan had not been allowed in Faisal Mosque during the visit of British Prime Minister Tony Blair. Senator Rehmatullah Kakar raised the issue on a point of order, and was backed by Sher Afgan Niazi.
