India and Russia have signed a deal for a second nuclear submarine to beef up Indian naval power.

China has nuclear submarines, and these patrol the Bay of Bengal. The Chinese navy also has a refueling base in Burma as well. To counter the Chinese threat, #India had been leased a nuclear submarine by the erstwhile Soviet Union in the eighties for experience in handling a nuclear-powered submarine. The Submarine was later returned to the successor state #Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union. India and Russia however, maintained strong military ties and in 2011 a nuclear-powered submarine was handed over to the Indian navy by Russia. The navy was based at the Eastern Naval command base at Visazagapatnam.

The navy commissioned the submarine into active service in 2012. The submarine leased was the Akula class SSN attack vessel. This is in service as the INS Chakra.

Second submarine
India wished to further beef up its military capability against China and was keen for a second nuclear submarine. The deal for the same was signed at the recent BRICS summit at Goa between Russia and India. The submarine is the same Akula-class already in service with the Indian navy. The deal is worth close to $2 billion. The earlier submarine deal was $1.5 billion. The Akula-class submarines are good, but a shade inferior to the American Navy's similar Sea-wolf class submarines.

The Indian navy wanted the more advanced Project Yasin 885 class submarines but only one is in service with the Russian navy and it will be years before more are built. Hence the Indian navy accepted the Akula-class submarine. The vessel which is in service with the Russian navy will be modernized and delivered to India by 2020-21.

I think India had asked for Yasen class. This submarine has a great speed and can virtually chase anything in sea and destroy them with its unique weapon like Brahmos, K series etc.

Yo man, we better get our nuclear sub rolling out soon

To counter a nuclear sub, you don't necessarily need a nuclear one. A diesel electric will do better, since it's more quieter.
Nuclear Subs have endurance, but too many diesels have killed a nuclear sub because they were just quieter.

However, India's Defence needs are DIFFERENT to ours. They have China to contend with since they both will soon be competing for Asian leadership in the far east. That is where they need endurance and longer reach.

Endurance, longer reach, and most importantly a competent crew.

With IN's poor safety record, it is scary that they are getting nuclear subs.

The safety record has to do with bad management at Shipyards and ignoring safety rules. The IN did carry out measures to correct the negligence that certain officers showed in their submarine and overall maintenance arm. Hopefully, there should be no such issues.

We also forget that the IN is a large navy, and the ratio of officer calibre varies across the board. Due to a much more vibrant private sector; they have greater difficulty in attracting a better pool of recruits than other nations where military life is much more secure than other employment options.

In situations like this, a special "retainment allowance" is issued, which brings the salary and perks, on par with their civilian counterparts. We have a very effective program, that actually results in a better package. It started with the air force, but now applies to all three services. Don't they have something similar?

Better get more scared, because there's going to be a lot more local SSBNs and SSNs going to be launched, forget the Russian ones.

Thx. It was pretty much a training session for Indians that lasted just 3 years and was manned partially by Soviets.

Pretty much all submarine operations are 'training sessions' since none of them have actually gone to war. Especially the subs in India, pakistan or china.

But fact remains that India HAS operated nuclear subs since the 80's.

Keep your needless arrogance out of civil comments and avoid trying to flame.

Thanks

I heard that diesel sub's are quiter only when they are using AIP+here limitations are speed) or submerged stand by conditions. Otherwise nuclear subs are quieter while moving.correct me if I am wrong.
I agree with ur point that there is no need for another sub to count another sub, better options are available as anti sub surface fleet ,its just saying my enemy had say X anti aircraft missile and I will by Y antiaircraft missile to counter.
