Tthe Manora Breakwater and the River Son canal system' taken in the 1870s. The Manora breakwater was an important feature of the Karachi Harbour Improvement works, it provided protection to the Karachi harbour and deepened the entrance. They were planned in 1858 by James Walker, Civil Engineer and built between 1869 and 1873. Originally Karachi was a group of small villages made up of a cluster of fishermen’s huts. Due to it's location at the western end of the Indus delta the town has always been an important gateway for trade into central Asia. Karachi harbour developments were carried out through the mid 19th century due to an increase in the number of ships from international ports carrying goods to and from the sub continent. With the development of its harbour it grew into an important centre of trade and industry.

Gwadar sea port


Under the strong support of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs of Pakistan and FBR, the transit goods in Afghanistan have been gradually normalized. On 8 December, 22,000 tons of DAP fertilizer arrived and will be unloaded, bagged and trucked to Afghanistan in Gwadar. Under the epidemic situation, it provides a rare business opportunity for local customs clearance, labor service and logistics companies!

Gwadar fencing project kick-starts to shield belt and road projects

In initial stage, barbed wires will be installed around 15,000-acre land of Gwadar city
GPA chief says the initiative to install fences will transform Gwadar and it will become safer and more secure

As part of security measures to protect belt and road projects from potential terrorist attacks, the work on Gwadar Fencing Project has finally kicked off under the Gwadar Smart Port City Master Plan 2017-2050, local media has reported.

As per details, barbed wires will be installed in phases in collaboration with the army, Makran Administration, Gwadar Development Authority, Gwadar Port Authority and Balochistan government.

In the initial stage, security fences are being installed around 15,000-acre land of Gwadar city. Three or four entry and exit points will be established to help regulate inflow and outflow of traffic and people in a befitting manner.

Commenting on the matter, Gwadar Port Authority (GPA) Chairman Naseer Khan Kashani said that the fencing project will change the security dynamics in Gwadar Port as well as Gwadar city, globally-famous as crown jewel of CPEC.

“It was a long proposed desire that has come true now,” he added. He said that the initiative to install fences will transform Gwadar and it will become safer and more secure.

Kashani maintained that one of the finest advantages of fencing Gwadar would be to help instil the sense of free movement. “Check post free area inside the fence lines would allow people walking and driving as per their own time and pace like as bird flying in sky,” he mentioned.

Meanwhile, GDA senior official said that Chinese nationals who are working on different projects in the area could not enjoy routine life in the streets and markets of Gwadar due to security issues. “Recent terror attack at private hotel in Gwadar had further limited their foot movement,” he added.

Gwadar Port welcomes the arrival of Secretary Ministry of Defence Lt. Gen. (R) Mian Hilal Hussain and Acting Chairman & President (East Africa) Djibouti National Parliament, Muhammad Ali Hamid.

Gwadar Port has already demonstrated great potentials in enhancing regional trade connectivity.
Afghanistan as well as Central Asian countries have reached out to Pakistan’s commercial department in attempt to further develop cooperation upon transit cargos through the port.

ISLAMABAD: The port authorities of Gwadar, Karachi and Qasim would establish ferry terminals replicating all the operation facilities related to security, immigration and customs of any international airport country in collaboration with other ministries concerned.

This was the crux of the maritime affairs ministry meeting, which was held on Wednesday to review progress on the commencement of ferry service to all possible destinations across the world, according to a press release.

In view of the government’s blue economy policy, the federal cabinet last year had given approval to the launching of a ferry service for pilgrims (Zaireen and Hujjaj) to provide them an affordable travel facility. “All necessary facilities — immigration and customs — will be provided to passengers at Port Qasim, Karachi, and Gwadar,” Information Minister Shibli Faraz said in his post-cabinet meeting press conference on September 09, 2020.

He had added that there was no opposition to the ferry service in the cabinet and the decision was taken through a majority vote.

Wednesday’s review meeting was presided over by Maritime Affairs Secretary Rizwan Ahmed at Karachi Port Trust Head Office. KPT Chairman Nadir Mumtaz Warraich and other stakeholders also participated in the meeting.

“The ferry terminals at Gwadar Port, Karachi Port and Port Qasim would be established by the respective port authorities, replicating all the operation facilities related to security, immigration and customs of any international airport country in collaboration with other concerned ministries,” it reads.

According to the maritime ministry’s proposal, it had prepared feasibility to launch the service not only for the Middle East but other destinations as well. Moreover, Maritime Affairs Ali Zaidi had previously also hinted about launching the ferry service to provide economical transport to pilgrims going to Saudi Arabia for Haj and Umrah.

The minister had hoped that Haj, Umrah and pilgrimages to the middle-eastern countries could become economical through this service.

The government would welcome the private sector to operate such services including the one for pilgrims going to Iraq, he had said.
