There is ZERO news in the mainstream press about a purported Filipino purchase of Italian arms. I don't know where you got your tabloid citation, but it's garbage. Citations are only worthwhile if they are from reputable sources. Your citation is crap.

To me, it sounds like they signed a MOU (memorandum of understanding). There was no weapon purchase. It's just talk and window shopping.

I believe the Filipinos backed out of the F16 deal because the planes offered had only 500 flight hours left. The US did not offer the extended airframe hours upgrade. Hence they may be going for the Korean T-50 or the Italian AMX to train their pilots before purchasing real MRFs

Also, the I believe Philippines bought one Maestrale or Soldati frigate that the Italian Navy is set to decommission this year or early next year and that is in addition to the other Hamilton Coast Guard ship they just bought from the US. So by next year they will have 3 frigate class ships (2 WHECs and 1 Maestrale). Moreover, they just signed a contract with Japan to purchase 12 brand new Coast Guard ships. They will be buying more attack and transport helicopters, maritime patrol planes, transport planes, coast watch radars etc. So they are arming but I think as far as the shoals are concerned they lost big time.

Oh one more thing, during my business trip last year, I never saw famine conditions like I saw when I was in Africa but I did see a lot, I mean a lot of poverty and homeless families living on the streets a mere 100 ft away from ritzy hotels and condominiums. Pretty sad.
