SC ponders over whether Pakistan can be declared a secular state

you and me both know what happened when that law was passed.

We have peace in the country and religious minority rights must be protected. But we will walk straight and would neither turn right towards a theocratic state nor left towards a secular state.

stop worrying about Pakistan. Pakistan was created in the name of Islam and will remain an Islamic Republic. the concern is false secular claims about bharat, which is turning out to be more and more of a extremist hindu country with no sensitivity or respect towards other religions.

Dont tell me.. I didnt write the article, its from a Pakistani newspaper !

And what i dont get is why a Bharti whose own country is in anarchical state so bothered that he is starting a thread on a certain secularism debate in Pakistan.how is that any of urs business.
No there will come no retarded seculariam in Pakistan,

At the moment we are alredy 75pc secular, how much islam u see in our judiciary, institutions, governemnts, the manner in which country's affairs are run.
Heck even iranian gov is more islamic than ours. uk welfare system and parts of american constitution are more closer to islamic than what rubbish we see in pakistan.

Again worry abt india than poking nose in pak affairs

means if Pakistan is declared secular state.there will be open bars vodka, black label and wine bhi where can i vote for this secular Pakistan.

India is a secular state and we do not have anything you said.

actually, it makes a big difference. Declaring Pakistan secular leads to a change in mind set (even if initially this is at the top of government/ law). It helps to remove religion from politics, takes power away from uneducated religious fanatics and holds those who commit crimes in the name of religion accountable (i.e. there is a direct link with terrorism). It is a process, and that process starts with naming Pakistan a secular state. Happy to hear there is an intelligent debate going on!

hmmm i understand that you might be in West but its an islamic state and it will remain .. Islam is religion of Peace i hope you agree with me and if you do then it will remain Islamic Republic of Pakistan..
india is secular and they have RSS and Bajrandal and many many extrem indiginous seprate moment..what they gained.. its choice of people of land and it will remain islamic insha'Allah.

I'm guessing you don't know the definition of secularism..

Lemme help you.

  1. Secularism is a principle that involves two basic propositions. The first is the strict separation of the state from religious institutions. The second is that people of different religions and beliefs are equal before the law.

What's wrong with that?? You'll still remain a Muslim in a Muslim majority country, free to follow your religious duties and everything.

Just that state affairs would be separate from Religion and every Pakistani (including Minorities) would be considered as the equal citizens of Pakistan free to follow their religious rituals.

Isn't it what Quiad said too?? Go and read his 11th August Speech. Thanks !
Islam also says that all Humans are equal and they shuold be judged equally. It is just us who don't practice islam properly.
Pakistan was made for Muslims especially and is an Islamic Republic. It was made on two nation theory which says that Muslims are one nation and disbelievers are another nation.
I do not want to argue with people who do not have proper knowledge and just come here bla-ing about secularism.

bro just show me where it is written in Islam that non Muslim cant lead Muslim. we denied qadianis there rights based on the concept that only muslims are first class citizen rest can go to hell. they are as much pakistani as we are.if its every pakistanis right that he can vote then why cant he lead this country does this mean that they don't belong here. you and me both know what happened when that law was passed.
Only a Muslim can be the head of the state because more than 95% population of pakistan is Muslims. And as a Muslim, the head has to be equal to Muslims and Non-Muslims. Pakistan was made a model of Islam but did not succeed. Islam tells us that everyone is equal.
I would be disappointed if a non-muslim would lead a 95% muslims country, wouldn't anyone else?

India is a secular state and we do not have anything you said.
damn, than secularism is not implemented correctly. Must be it right?

SC ponders over whether Pakistan can be declared a secular state - The Express Tribune

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court judges on Monday debated the mechanism that would be needed to declare Pakistan a secular state.

Hearing constitutional petitions against the 18th and 21st Constitutional Amendments, a 17-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk questioned how the country would go about declaring itself a secular state if there is a popular demand for change.

The chief justice questioned whether such a process could be carried out through a constituent assembly. “How can the constituent assembly be formed at present stage?”

“If a political party whose manifesto supported such a declaration comes to power, how does that party plan on making the country secular?” Justice Mian Saqib Nisar questioned.

Proposing a solution, Hamid Khan, counsel for different bar associations suggested that it could be carried out through a referendum.

Justice Asif Saeed Khosa also questioned whether parliament had the power to pass an amendment to the Constitution which would declare the country secular.

Taking a page out of history, Justice Khosa said the country was created in the name of Islam in 1947 and later reaffirmed its commitment to being an Islamic state in 1949 with the Objectives Resolution, which was also supported by East Pakistan. However, Khosa pointed out how East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) went on to declare their country a secular state after partition. Later, Bangladesh attempted to declare the country an Islamic state through a constitutional amendments, but the Bangladesh Supreme Court annulled the amendment.

Citing the example of Turkey, Justice Khosa added people and their ideologies change with the passage of time. However, Jutsice Khawaja believed changes in Bangladesh and Turkey were rooted in revolution.

If our nation is a secular state:
What is then there for our soldiers to fight for?, what is there to unite one of the most diverse country?, what will there be to be patriotic for?, where will be we get 'jazbah' from?

What the fcuk? Country is on fire and these RETARDS are discussing secularity of Pakistan? A country based on Islam?

I'm sorry to say but Two Nation Theory failed the day Bangladesh got separated from us, also more Muslims live in India than in Pakistan, so what 2 Nation theory are you on about, please elaborate??

The whole point of Pakistan in my opinion is a Muslim majority state in the subcontinent, we should strive for a secular Pakistan to get rid of Mullahism.

For heaven's sake. Pakistan's problem is NOT Islam.

Pakistan, as a nation, rejects fake Mullahs like Fazal ur Rehman and so on. These idiots never got power. But your thinking of declaring Pakistan a "secular" state is absolutely ludicrous! Our country needs effective and independent institutions, education, removal of feudal order, and so on. While you focus on non-issues like secularism. Common thread of Islam is absolutely necessary to keep our country united. Our entire armed forces are trained on the premise of protecting Islamic Pakistan. Your illthought mantra of secularism will demolish Pakistan from its roots.

Pakistan is like a ship with big whole in it, and people like you are suggesting "The food was not good last night. We should change the cook. And cook must be secularism"....

Point: You are over-seeing absolutely CRITICAL problems that are killing our nation (like corruption, feudalism, nepotism, family-based political classes and so on)...while you are focusing your energies on something that is absolutely irrelevant to Pakistan's survival.

Are you suggesting the soldiers from Secular states have nothing to fight for ? !!

... and they dont win wars & create new nations ?

I am just gonna quickly revisit history -

1. Jinnah envisaged Pakistan as a secular nation - this is because he expected that ENTIRE Muslim majority provinces would form Pakistan - this included ALL of Punjab and ALL of Bengal. The last thing he expected was that Punjab and Bengal would be split along religious lines. This would have given a very sizable non-Muslim minority to Pakistan.

2. In 1971 - while East Pakistan had a higher population; if I remember correctly there were more Muslims in West Pakistan because East Pakistan continued to have a relatively large Hindu population. This did create ill-will in the West and places like Jagannath Hall in Dacca University were specifically targeted by the Pak Army in 71 to kill Hindus.

Anyhow - it really does not matter whether a state is secular or not - what matters is that society is secular. The United Kingdom is technically theocratic; while India is technically secular. But it is safe to say that the British society is a lot more secular.

What is needed in the subcontinent - be it India, Pakistan or Bangladesh - is tolerance. Tolerance of people with different faiths, tolerance of people with different sexual orientations, tolerance of the Arts. Till our societies learn to be tolerant - changing a few words in the Constitution will mean nothing.

We will never be secular Pakistan always will be Islamic Pakistan
