Saudi woman to get 10 lashes for driving a car

WALTERS: A flash point for Westerners is that Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world in which women are not allowed to drive. It seems to be symbolic of women's lack of independence. Would you support allowing a woman to drive?

KING ABDULLAH: I believe strongly in the rights of women ... my mother is a woman, my sister is a woman, my daughter is a woman, my wife is a woman. I believe the day will come when women drive. In fact, if you look at the areas in Saudi Arabia, the deserts and in the rural areas, you will find that women do drive. The issue will require patience. In time, I believe it will be possible.

WALTERS: You cannot just make a decree that women drive? You're the king!

KING ABDULLAH: I value and take care of my people as I would my eye.

WALTERS: Is that an answer?

KING ABDULLAH: Yes. I respect my people. It is impossible that I would do anything that is not acceptable to my people.

WALTERS: But there are so many restrictions against women. Do you see this changing?

KING ABDULLAH: Yes, I believe we can. But it will require a little bit of time ... Our people are just now beginning to open up to the world, and I believe that with the passing of days in the future everything is possible.

WALTERS: Saudi Arabia is the only Arab country in which women do not have the right to vote. Do you foresee that they will be able to vote perhaps in your next municipal elections?

KING ABDULLAH: Our people are just now beginning to open up to the world, and I believe that with the passing of days, in the future, everything is possible.

This is an Interview he had

this shows that the masses' attitude and also religious guys who are powerful is not ready to accept changes in SA right now, the king know it and he wants to be patient. this is good approach, dont do a rush solution.

.
The reality is the Ground Realities in Saudi Arabia are not suitable for Allowing women to Drive.

There are so many issues, for example

- As Saudi People Drive without following the rules and about 50 thousand Accidents each year so If Women allowed then the number will be doubled.

- As in each home there are more then one cars, so if women allowed there will be more Cars and then Huge traffic Jams (Already the roads are out of Space).

- as the youngsters here are ambitious of Girls and Driving fast, so there will be about 10 guys around one girl's car and there will be mess.

As I think Women should not be allowed to drive in KSA

you sir are a genius...how about not allowing women to go out of home?? that would save fuel, less traffic..

baseless excuses. considering the above reasons, why not ban men driving and allow women----for a change.

I live in saudi arabia and i would like to say that saudi arabia is the most safest place for both men and women , and the respect people show to women are better than anywhere else

The case of driving for women, it will happen sooner, but it needs time (to accept the changes for the fixed minds), but for sure saudi arabia is opening up

You just ruined some people's agenda..............................

it's really shame, what happened to that girl
but since the government and the people did not approve the driving issue
it's still illegal for women to drive
that girl broke the rules, it happens any where

I see my self as an activist for women rights and and freedom
the king is somehow liberal, but believe it or not the issue is not from the king it's
from the conservative idiots who don't like any change in their system

believe me every one this issue will be solved soon

I agree with everything you said above except the bolded part.

.
I agree with everything you said above except the bolded part.

this country and the people have suffered from the control of some clerics who do not represent the true message of our prophet (PBUH )

I want you you to imagine that TV channels newspapers and the ministry of education was controled by them
the mind set of the people will be affected by their ideology and the way they think and behave

that the reason why the king said that it's up to the people, those people used to be brainwashed by these clerics

but since king abdullah came in, this hole thing have changed. he guaranteed the freedom of speech for the newspapers and to news corps.

The mindset of the people is changing, now I want you to know that almost all of the major newspapers and news corps is under the hands of the liberal activists.

the minister of education is also a liberal person and his deputy minister is a lady liberal
you can see that the country and the people are changing.

that's the reason I said the this issue will end soon

.
What if those so called idiots are doing things or ordering things according to Islam ?

banning women from driving is NOT according to islam
even if you ask them, they will tell you it's not according to religion

the banning issue is from their mentality, and their sick minds
some people will only think about sex and think that all the people are just like them

they said that they want to secure the women from the dangers of the outside (funny isn't it ?)
they say that we want to treat her as a queen and serve her with all my heart
which is a big lie !!

they do that because they are not ready for a change !!
and I mean the slightest change

as i said before, i agree with all your points, but it will not be solved soon as you said in your previous post, it will take centuries if we consider the mindset of people and power of religious bodies. The religious bodies have power because people have given them, if peole are not in their favour, they will lose everything in a blink of an eye.

.
you sir are a genius...how about not allowing women to go out of home?? that would save fuel, less traffic..

Its not me, Here the most of People think like that about women driving.

And even whenever i talked to Saudis Persons they say that there will be huge mess after allowing the women to drive.

baseless excuses. considering the above reasons, why not ban men driving and allow women----for a change.

Haha, you know
I am working in Govt Dept, where 2600-Men & 0-woman.
So why not first bring change here?

;)

.
agree wid you bro^^^...most of the people who are against the ban on women driving dont know the situation in Saudi Arabia..i love tht women are not permitted to drive here and hope tht it will remain forever...i am not against women driving but since I born and raised here I know what lifting the ban will bring

.
do the women have balls to officially register rape cases in these countries? they will fear that they themselves be tried in a court for adultry, so keeping quiet is the best option.

Actually in Iran they do and dozens of rapists are summarily executed each year in Iran. Some cases of gang rapes reached a media frenzy point in Iran. In Saudi Arabia I dont know. But the point is not if a country has harsh penalties for rape it should also ban driving for women. It is none sense. Even if you have all the laws in your land in perfect order but do not allow women to drive, it does not make it ok. Saudi should allow women to drive. Just like all other Muslim and non-Muslim countries. End of the line.

So you accept the ban is because of your "personal feelings" and has nothing to do with Islam. Because during Prophet (PBUH) time women and girls used to ride camels and horses. I think Saudis should accept Islam and do away with their tribal traditions which are all from the time of Jahalat.
