It's definitely bragging rights trumping practicality. The money would be infinitely better spent putting humans on the moon or Mars. THAT is bragging rights!

Also, haven't engineers come to the conclusion that the super-towers are so heavy that even with bedrock support, they collapse the earth beneath them, and sink?

Last thought - the bragging rights last as long as it takes for another country to beat it. These days, that's only taking a few years. It's like the world record for the 100 meters dash, as the record goes from 11.12, 11.08, 10.96, 10.89, etc.

Why would we spend trillions trying to go to space when a country such as yours have already reached building a space station?? We have started a space exploration program last year btw...just putting that out there.....

Besides this building is 0% government is just some rich dude fulfilling what must be one of his life's dreams. If he wants to spend his money on building buildings or buying Yachts its his choice. But if you ask me I would pick him building a building over buying a yacht and a few mansions.

Very true. There are American billionaires that are poor role models, but others that are admirable. If I was one of them, I'd buy some cool toys (like some personal jet fighters) that people would say "what a waste." I'd also do charitable stuff. Everyone is different, everyone is entitled to opinion, and those with $$ can do what they'd like with it. If they want solid gold bathroom fixtures, they get them.

Firstly, Alwaleed bin Talal already gives away a lot to charity. But of course, if somebody is determined to have a bad opinion of Arabs or Muslims he would not see it, and presume that, like all Arabs, he lives in luxury while only rich Americans/Christians give their hard-earned wealth away to charity, like good Christians should. Secondly, the Arabs will not one day wake up and find out that they're "suddenly run out of oil". Oil production from wells will steadily decrease, causing an increase in prices, and since the majority of their oil wealth is re-invested in bonds and such, they'll continue to function. So sorry to the Arab haters, but you won't see your dream of "Arabs running out of oil" come true.

I remember reading one article about ME in which it was said that the Gulf Arabs love their past so much that they can no problem returning to their nomadic ways if something happens to their oil reserves. If Arabs run out of oil , the only one left crying will be the developed and developing world. We need oil more than Arabs, so as to keep our economy running and our masses happy. So God forbid they run out of oil before we find some alternative for oil.

Also GCC Arabs have made trust funds to fund their future generations.
