Saudi King Changes Weekend to Friday and Saturday

Alriyadh Newspaper: Local News - Royal Order: Weekend is on Saturday and Friday


Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah has today issued a royal order that Friday and Saturday should be the new weekend holidays. The original weekend in the Kingdom was Thursday-Friday.

Accordingly, the order will be enforced Saturday, June 29, for all ministries, government departments, financial institutions as well as the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency, the Capital Market Authority, and the Saudi Stock Exchange.

For universities, schools, and other educational institutions, the order will be effective by the beginning of the next academic year 2013-2014.

According to the royal order, this decision has been taken to better serve the Kingdom’s economic interests and help it meet its regional and global obligations in a way that benefits all citizens.

Alot of the Arab nations are seemingly advocating for a Friday-Saturday holiday, the Thurs-Fri weekend absolutely ruins the schedules for international obligations, and also contracts etc.

The Western countries have holiday on Sat-Sun, Arabs have it on Thurs-Fri, so 4 days out of 7 already lost in international dealings. Now it'll be only 3.

Wow. I didn't know other parts of the world had different weekends haha. Makes sense though, since the Saturday-Sunday weekend is Christian (sunday is holy day) then I don't see why saudi arabia wouldn't have friday, being a holy day, part of the weekend

The same happened to us, people made a big fuss when the Gov decided to switch the weekend into Fri-Sat about 11 years ago.

If you read Quran Islamic ally I don't think holiday on Friday is justified because ALLAH says when you hear azan leave your business and go for Jummah Salah and after offering it return to your business and also keep doing zikar
