Saudi Arabia's double game in South Asia

As I said in another thread the facade of religious brotherhood is giving way to realpolitik and thats best for all parties involved. Saudis dont care about Kashmir and Pakistan cannot be hostile towards Iran in the way Saudi wants (we are neighbors for goodness sake). Its a relationship which has its limits and "religious brotherhood" has been used to enhance its facade in the past. With that going away now both parties get a better perception of where the other stands.

I think its been realpolitik from the start. Religious affiliation can be nicely utilized to achieve goals. saudi and iran have both been doing it.

Very realistic picture presented in the article. Saudi will lose support if it changes the policies of its old kings. KL summit was just a start, OIC will soon be replaced if they keep it useless as it is.

If Saudis kickout 2 million Pakistani workers Pakistan will really be on the ropes. renewables is reducing the clout of the petrodollar kingdoms but they still have hefty economic clout

Pakistanis are just an ungrateful lot. The more that Saudi does for Pakistan, the more Pakistanis expect. They (Pakistanis) never appreciate what was done for them but are quick to complain about what was not done for them. Saudi has no reason to go out of its way to accommodate Pakistan in the manner in which it did over the years since the formation of Pakistan. Instead, Pakistan takes huge handouts from Saudi, complaining all the way as they use it up
It's geo-politics, which means it's ALWAYS about one's own interest.

If the Saudis have no reason to go out of the way to accommodate Pakistani interests, then Pakistan is going to reciprocate in kind.

It is also about how much leverage you have

you saw what KSA, UAE and Bahrain did to Pakistan's anti-Modi campaign

Saudis will return to Pakistan. Just wait for the US troops to leave Afghanistan. Saudis and the US never wanted Karachi to be accessible to the Central Asian and Russian energy supply. We even now have Gwadar in addition to Karachi port.
Indians, Iranians and the Saudis share common interests in keeping Afghanistan volatile which is never favorable to Pakistan.

Is there some kind of weird logic that energy has to flow through Karachi ? I don't see the geography for that

Russian energy flows to Europe, China and Japan. Not that additional customers won't hurt.

There are really two large markets for Central Asian energy - China and India. Karachi has no bearing for either of those

There is 75 percent chance we may see a 1990s style Afghan Civil War after the US leaves question is who will be the willing country in the region to slow down that conflict dunno know too may holders in that part of the world

Every country looks after its own interests. Pakistan and Pakistanis needs to realize that, the only way forward is to strengthen our economy and then make deals based on mutual benefits.

Pakistan has nothing to offer to Saudis that any other can't offer for the right price.

And no. Pakistan will not share its nukes with Saudis. Our military isn't that stupid. Its a notion that people created to justify aid given to us by Saudis

How about the over 2 million workers in Saudi... That's the sword over Pakistanis that Saudis wield...

I wish Pakistan was economically independent... But decades of Corruption has reduced the nation into beggars.

Saudi Arabia has unconditional support from Pakistan.

There need be no worry.

Saudi downfall started when it embarked on regime change in yemen. THey need to end the war accept the yemeni people will.It will save them a lot if they swallow their stupidity a bit.

Its not that easy. Removing 2 million skilled workers can cause alot of damage to saudi itself. Not to forget we can also pull out thousands of military trainers and missiles placed in saudi, hundreds of saudi cadets studying in Pakistan, plus the many defence pacts signed to protect saudi. You have no idea how much iran wants pak saudi relations to be disrupted.

JEDDAH: More than 1.6 million Pakistanis proceeded to Saudi Arabia between 2011 and 2015 for employment purpose, making the country the largest market for Pakistani workers across the world.
This makes up 49.9 percent of Pakistanis who went abroad seeking jobs, according to the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development.

Nearly 1.3 million people (38.2 percent) proceeded to UAE for employment during the same period.
Oman was the third largest importer of Pakistani manpower and 0.26 million (7.6 percent) job-seekers proceeded to Oman during 2011-2015, Pakistani media quoted a ministry official as saying.
The illiterate and unskilled workers comprises around half of the total Pakistani migrant workers and only 1.76 percent workers are doing white collar jobs, the official said.

Among the skilled workers, drivers are in the highest number, followed by masons, carpenters and tailors.
Since 1971 till Dec. 2015, around 8.77 million Pakistanis proceeded abroad for employment through the Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment (BEOE).

Out of this total manpower exports, about 96 percent have proceeded only to Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, one percent to European countries and three percent to other countries for employment during the same period.

if they kick them out they will go to another country. Its not like pakistani workers only work in saudi arabia and no where else, and its not like they are treated like kings there either, they survive on paltry wages and work like a slave. There is no gratitute pakistanis owe to saudis.
