Its more to do with economics than religious angle. Saudi Arabia is trying to diversify its economy from oil to other aspects. India will be great market for Saudi investment and we have seen the growing Saudi interest in investment in infrastructure in India.

What people needs to realize is that it all comes down to economic benefits. Saudis used Pakistan for raising fundamentalists and now coming close to India for economic gains.

So there needs to be differentiation when both countries are discussed vis a vis Saudi Arabia.

India saudi relationship depends upon

1. Trade (Oil)- By 2010, annual Indo-Saudi trade grew to $25 billion. Saudi Arabia now exports more oil to China than the US. India is its fourth largest oil export market.
2. Iran- For obvious reason

Saudis would do well to turn off the pipe at their end, regarding terrorism. Half of the world's Islamic terrorism, whether in Pakistan or afgh or Africa is funded by money from rich Saudi nationals. Well, Iranian angle is what we all know. WIf we remember, it was KSA that offered India to give more oil if we stopped our supply from Iran. So yeah, its a factor too but India keeps its friends mutually exclusive and try not to mix things up.

Success of Indian Foreign policy has been in dealing Israel & Iran, Israel & Palestine, Iran & KSA, US & Russia.

That's why Iran can be kept out even if KSA pushes hard to reduce our trade relations with Iran. Iran has its own significance for India. To get our resources from mines in Afghanistan that Indian companies won, we need Iran and Chahbhar port. We can't get or depend on transit through Pakistan.
