Saudi Arabia has agreed to donate $118 million to set up 560 model mosques across Bangladesh, a media report said on Thursday.

The decision follows Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's last year vist to Saudi Arabia where she met King Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, the Dhaka Tribune reported.


The mosques will be able to accommodate at least 450,000 men and over 30,000 women for daily prayers and will have lodging space for more than 2,000 foreign guests and libraries.

The Saudi government has also agreed to donate money to establish a permanent campus for the Islami Arabic University in Bangladesh.

We do not have any shortage of Mosque in BD. It is the land of mosque.It would have been much useful if Saudi provided that money to establish 560 model hospital in BD.

As a practicing Muslim myself, I dont really think this is going to be helpful.. given KSA's track record of spreading a certain version of Wahabism. We are currently in the midst of a volatile situation where extremism is getting shaped up. Though our security forces have done well, 560 mosques are way too much to keep a track of.

I hope we decline this offer. Bangladesh is the land of mosques and are building so many more through private and corporate initiatives. Dont really think we need 'model' mosques from KSA.

With that money, just build a campus of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology and regulate it with local laws. Keep an option to have a exchange semester in KSA or other partner universities.

I am sure there would be tons of applicants and we can certainly do with some good tech graduates.

Good Idea. But I think The 560 Upazilla Model Mosque is Idea of the Bangladeshi Govt. and KSA just agreed to Finance the Burden on request. Believe Me or not in Sheikh Hasina we are getting a new Erdogan. She has changed her course.

By the way Go to Villages and See for yourself. All the thatched village mosques are turning into Shining white Mosques by Arab funding. This is a new trend. The villagers just need to apply into rich Gulf countries for fund through their local expats.

These will be government mosque with modern facilities including library and school. If we teach wahabism then its none of Saudi's fault.
