HIGHLIGHTS
  • Latest images attest the presence of the Chinese army near the LAC
  • Some of the forward PLA positions near Gogra post continue to have Chinese posts
  • Depsang is another contested region where PLA has continued to upgrade its infrastructure

As the winter snow melts in the mountains, the Chinese ground forces seem to have recalibrated some of their positions near the Hot Springs and Gogra areas in Ladakh. Analysis of new high-resolution Synthetic-Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite imagery provided to India Today by space firm Capella Space confirms minor adjustments being made by the People's Liberation Army (PLA) of China.

The latest images attest the presence of the Chinese army near the Line of Actual Control (LAC), although their strength appears to have been reduced in some of the forward positions. The backward PLA positions, however, continue to horde the Chinese ground forces with new accommodations and bunkers.

India and China have been engaged in several military level talks to reduce the friction along the LAC over the last year. While the talks have successfully ensured complete disengagement from the Galwan river valley and the Pangong Lake area, the Chinese army continues to maintain its presence in other contested regions along the LAC.

Some of the forward PLA positions near Gogra post, which witnessed heavy build ups in July 2020, but later saw partial disengagement after military level talks, continue to have Chinese posts and vehicles according to the latest commercial satellite imagery.

A comparison of optical satellite imagery from February 2021 near Gogra post, with the SAR imagery of the same area from April 12 of this year, confirms the status quo in the vicinity.

However, some of the spots earlier seen acquired by the PLA in Hot Springs appear to have undergone minor recalibrations.

Heavy snowfall in the area, logistics and human resource related challenges associated with long-term deployments in difficult terrain may have led to the minor shuffle. However, the backward positions of the PLA near Hot Springs, which saw construction of permanent structures as well as bunkers and adjacent roads last year, continue to be occupied by the PLA.

Depsang is another contested region in Ladakh where Chinese armed forces have continued to upgrade their infrastructure over the course of the past few years. While Ladakh has remained a flashpoint between the two forces, the Chinese have not limited their hyperactivity merely to Ladakh.

Earlier, an India Today report showed increased PLA activity along India's eastern border. Commercial satellite imagery established construction of new Chinese posts and roads near Sikkim's Naku La border.

Indian Army Chief General MM Naravane, accompanied by Lt Gen YK Joshi, Army Commander of the Northern Command, and Lt Gen PGK Menon, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Leh-based Fire & Fury Corps, visited eastern Ladakh and reviewed India's operational preparedness earlier last month.

Following a bilateral decision made in February to withdraw troops from the area, the Indo-Chinese border conflict has quieted down recently. Nevertheless, recent training exercises and new weapon deliveries to Chinese forces in the region may serve to reignite tensions.

Reports by Indian media based on open-source analysis of Chinese social and traditional media have found that Chinese forces in the Xinjiang military district are being reinforced with more modern artillery systems including PHL-03 rocket launchers as well as 122mm PCL-161 and 155mm PCL-181 self-propelled howitzers. Until recently, Chinese troops in the region were generally equipped with older equipment but reports of new ZTQ-15 tanks replacing Type 88 tanks and ZBL-09 8×8 Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs) replacing older Type 63 Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) are growing increasingly common.

Meanwhile, new exercises by Chinese troops are being conducted near the Ladakh region resulting in a bolstered PLA presence. However, unlike last year, the PLA forces appear to be limiting their activities to traditional exercise areas. India’s Chief of the Army Staff Manoj Mukund Naravane has stated that Chinese activity is being watched closely and that India will not be caught off-guard again. He stressed that the February disengagement does not mean that the crisis has been deescalated; over 50,000 Indian troops are currently deployed in the East Ladakh region.

Nevertheless, Naravane has stressed that thus far there have been no significant issues with China following the February agreement. According to the general:

“The situation along the LAC (Line of Actual Control) post the disengagement of February has been very cordial. Both sides are observing that disengagement in letter and spirit. There has been no transgression of any kind. […] With no transgressions happening with no violations of this disengagement, I think the trust has built up.”
Indo-Chinese competition is not just limited to the Himalayas, however. As China has been building new bases in the Indian Ocean region as part of its so-called “String of Pearls” strategy, India has responded with similar initiatives. Building up a base in Mauritius has become one of India’s priority projects.

Welp get your curry and noodles bois , it's time for more skirmishes and propaganda from both sides :coffee:

China should make a proxy army and send them into India, they could arm the Kashmiri's
as a starter.
This will not happen. Considering China's history and capabilities, if China returns to the road of exporting armed revolution, it will be too shocking.

The Xinjiang Military district has always been the worst equipped military region and has always used the worst weapons. Now, with the provocation of India, it has finally been given the opportunity to upgrade its weaponry . The level of equipment modernization has increased dramatically in the past two years .

this is not a a development and there will be no skirmishes both China and India knows and are not willing.

when QUAD happens and China warns US of worst consequences in South China sea, if war happens in the region. why not China make its moves and prepare to hold one of the QUAD members by its neck?

we will see how gradually they will change entire North-East, North and North West of India challenging with bases, advanced equipment and what not.

this is war after all everyone has the right to prepare for it, so does India.

China needs to up its game when it comes to using proxies. Look at what the Americans
have done by making ISIS in the middle east, they also arm PKK against Turkey, TTP against
Pakistan and so many more.

China could use proxies against Taiwan, India and other enemies with out losing too much.
