IF true then its probably a situtation similar to the Bolghars and their assimilation into the Bulgarians. Their is evidence of iranic movement into Europe during the post Western Roman collapse period. The Iazyges settled down in Hungary and a branch of the Alans (to whom modern day Ossetians are related) made it all the way to Iberia. It is possible that a group of Iranic peoples migrated to to Croatia, gradually were assimilated into the local slavic culture (who would have been more numerous) but gave their own name to this group - just as the Turkic Bolghars did to the Bulgarians.
