This is the recent news from China. This is a problem that is not unique to China so we need to all address it. Even if your nation currently does not suffer from this problem as badly, this will likely change quickly as it has for China. Contraceptives (birth-control pills & condoms) seem the best way to reduce unplanned/unwanted pregnancies as sex is a natural phenomena.

May we value all human life, even unborn ones! This also applies to nations that have exploding populations. It is unrealistic to believe we can "enforce" people not to have sex. And the option of 'neuturing' people..... well you guys debate.

Abortion stats cause for concern

Inadequate knowledge about contraception is a major factor in the 13 million abortions performed in China every year, research shows.

This is an unfortunate - and avoidable - situation, experts said, and improvements need to be made.

Li Ying, a professor at Peking University, said yesterday that young people need more knowledge about sex.

A survey done by 411 Hospital of PLA (People's Liberation Army) in Shanghai, for example, found that less than 30 percent of callers to a hotline knew how to avoid pregnancy, and only 17 percent were aware of venereal diseases.

More than 70 percent said they did not know sexual transmission is the major contributor to the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Li said Chinese parents are reluctant to teach their children about sex, so more needs to be done on sex education.

"Sex education needs to be strengthened, with universities and our society giving more guidance," she said.

Wu Shangchun, a division director of the National Population and Family Planning Commission's technology research center, told China Daily that research shows nearly half of the women who had abortions had not used any form of contraception.

"The challenge of reducing (the number) of women seeking abortions in China is tough," Wu said.

Yu Dongyan, a hospital gynecologist, said new mores have changed the social setting.

"Sex is no longer considered taboo among young people today, and they believe they can learn everything they need from the Internet. But it doesn't mean they've developed a proper understanding or attitude toward it," Yu said.

Government statistics show that about 62 percent of the women who have abortions are between 20 and 29 years old, and most are single.

Wu said the real number of abortions is much higher than reported, because the figures are collected only from registered medical institutions.

Many abortions, Wu said, are performed in unregistered clinics.

Also, about 10 million abortion-inducing pills, used in hospitals for early-stage abortions, are sold every year in the country, she said.

The Shanghai hotline, which offers help for pregnant women, has reported an increase in calls, mostly from women 18 and under.

Figures from 411 Hospital show that as many as 30 calls were received on its hotline some days this month, compared with about 10 per day in pervious months.

Most callers had questions about what to do after becoming pregnant or how to get an abortion, said Yu.

Wu said birth control information mainly reaches young married couples.

The morning-after pill, which can be used within 120 hours of intercourse to prevent pregnancy, has been widely sold as emergency contraception since 1998, she said.

Wu said the pills have sold well, but she added that incorrect use is a problem.

Wu also said much information on the Internet about sex frequently is incorrect.

Sun Xiaohong, of the educational center of Shanghai's Population and Family Planning Commission, said she found it difficult to promote sex education in schools because some teachers and parents believe it will encourage sex.

Sun Aijun, a leading gynecologist at Beijing Union Hospital, said there also is a misconception among some women that the contraceptive pill is unsafe.

Sun said many unmarried couples choose to use condoms, but that this can be problematic because some women find it difficult to turn down requests from a partner not to use them.

Abortions cost about 600 yuan ($88). Since the 1990s, doctors have not asked for a woman's marital status when an abortion is performed.

There are about 20 million births in the country each year, Wu said.

Sadly a problem the world over

. . .
No matter how or where you want to look at it, despite all the conservative opposition, the only answer to better health and population control is SEX EDUCATION.

Neutering populations - ARE YOU NUTS? Which sane person comes up with such bollocks?

Better education and increased awareness about unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases would help not only the general population but also the youth - teens and the overall health of women, the most affected demographic.

Please as a responsible citizen of any country, make sure that your kids get proper age dependent sex education.

Seriously politics aside, people and governments need to really grow up!

.
That is a great communist solution:hitwall:

:woot:

I'm not communist. By the way, neutering was tried in India not so long ago if I remember correctly. I'm just being honest here, having option (1) is easiest since tying a women's "tube" can easily be corrected later on when she wants a baby. Tying a men's "tube" is difficult and risky since the doctor/surgeon might accidentally snip the penis.

This way the couple (or single) can still engage in healthy sex and no babies. Let's get real, condoms and contraceptive pills work great -- IF it is used. I say let's do both (a) condoms, (b) pills, and (c) typing woman's tube.

Besides ejaculation and foreplay are very important to sex! :smitten:

See problem solved! People can have sex, no unfortunate abortions, no unwanted pregnancies! :smitten:

Mate, seriously, this is no laughing matter. Health of the general population is a very serious issue. Governments spend a lot of money on healthcare.
And women are not objects that you can impose your will on them. Proper education will go a long way in helping women to undertake important decisions about their own bodies.

Sex education does NOT work! Tried it in the West (USA, Canada, Europe) but instead of lowering unwanted teen pregnancies it goes up!!! UP!!! UP!!! I can tell you from personal experience when the teacher was mentioned VAGINAS, PENISES, BABIES, PETTING.... hot damn! The kids (myself included) got horny!

Truth is we need to be honest with kids. Tell them the truth. That is, refrain from sex until marriage if you can - but if you "must" then put on a friggin condom or birth pills first!!! Tell them sex only lasts 5-10 minutes and most 'partners' separate after that, so it's not "true love" only "lust". Just tell them the truth :smitten:

I'm being honest here. How many of you can say you can live your ENTIRE life without EVER engaging in sex??? How many of population??? I betcha most of those who NEVER will ever have sex is because they can't (e.g. quadaplegic, or serious veneral disease that ends their life early, etc) not because they don't want to.

A women's cycle lasts about 1 full lunar cycle (approximately 28 days +/- 10 days variation). I've actually studied this quite a bit. :) The "window" of pregnancy is about 3-4 days as sperm lives in a woman's vagina for about 5 days and optimal ovulation happens about 2-3 days. Basically 1 out of 7 days on average a women may become impregnated.

So that means on average she can engage in sex 7 separate days on average before expecting a baby. So without 'family planning' (i.e. based on ovulation cycle) or any contraceptives, and to maintain current population (i.e. 2 babies per couple) ---> A COUPLE SHOULD ONLY HAVE SEX 14 TIMES THEIR ENTIRE LIVES!!!!

Does that sound remotely reasonable to expect people to ONLY have sex 14 times their ENTIRE lives??? So the answer is (1) condoms, (2) pills and (3) tying a woman's tube. Unless you have a WORKABLE solution, please share it. I already explained how sex ed doesn't reduce sex among teens (see UK, Belarus, US, etc as examples). :smitten:

Sucess rates for becoming pregnant after reversal of tubal ligation vary according to age from 40 to 80% A contraceptive method that gives a woman a 50/50 chance of ever having a baby is never going to be popular.

Let's say contraceptives until your first baby. Raise the baby up well. Decide if you want to have another baby soon. If not then tube tie. If so then no tube tie.

But there seems to be hope in that uncontrolled population explosion isn't likely to happen. Take these examples:

(1) HK -- early on HK's population exploded but now its slowing considerably.

(2) Singapore

(3) Japan

(4) South Korea

(5) many parts in Europe

So much so that government policies are actually ENCOURAGING couples to have babies and giving them incentives.

:what:

This is a wierd place we live in, some places people are popping out babies like eating candy, while in others there is fear of drastic population decline.

.
sigh... i wish china would open up more on the subject of sex

.
One possible solution is to plan family keeping in view available resources at ones disposal.

One should also avoid illegal sex and if one does need to have sex than he or she should get married.

Look at USA and Europe where sex is free and legal. No one feels the need to get married. Family values and traditions have almost died down. This has also resulted in alterations in male to female ratios which in turn means that some if not many shall not have suitable partner to live with.
