Saad Hariri: Lebanon return from Saudi Arabia 'within days'

Hariri's resignation has sent shockwaves through Lebanon and the region
Lebanon's Prime Minister Saad Hariri says he will return home "in days" to formally submit his resignation.

Mr Hariri spoke to Future TV from Riyadh, his first public remarks since he announced he was stepping down last week.

His cabinet allies say he is being held captive, but Mr Hariri denied this.

He has blamed the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement for his resignation, citing concerns over his and his family's safety.

The US and UK have warned other countries not to use Lebanon for proxy conflicts.

Mr Hariri, a Sunni leader and businessman, was nominated to form Lebanon's government in November 2016.

"I have resigned. I am going to Lebanon very soon and I will resign in the constitutional manner," he said in the TV interview.

A sombre Mr Hariri recognised that he did not resign in the "usual way" but said he wanted to give his country a "positive shock".

"My resignation came as a wake-up call for Lebanon," he said.

In televised remarks from Riyadh a week ago, Mr Hariri accused Iran and Hezbollah, a Shia group, of taking over Lebanon and destabilising the wider region.

He took aim at Hezbollah in his televised interview, saying: "I am not against Hezbollah as a party, I have a problem with Hezbollah destroying the country."

Mr Hariri also said that if he was to rescind his resignation, the Hezbollah movement must respect Lebanon's policy of staying out of regional conflicts.

Iran and Hezbollah have accused Saudi Arabia of holding Mr Hariri hostage.

But Mr Hariri insisted that he was free to travel as he pleased in the country. "I am free here. If I want to travel tomorrow, I will," he said.

His father, the former Lebanese leader Rafik Hariri, was killed in a car bombing in 2005.

Mr Hariri said that the main problem for the region was "Iran interfering in Arab states".

"I will not be responsible for taking Lebanon to a confrontation with the Arab states," Mr Hariri said, citing the recent launch of a missile against Riyadh from Yemen.

The Saudi-led coalition has accused Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah operatives, working alongside Houthi rebels, of being behind the strike.

In a statement, UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said he hoped Mr Hariri would return to Lebanon "without further delay".

Mr Johnson said the country "should not be used as tool for proxy conflicts" and its independence should be respected.

A few people have in the past 1 week or so (when I was away) been posting Al-Jazeera and Iranian media propaganda that shamelessly and ridiculously claimed that Al-Hariri was a "prisoner" in KSA and that KSA "forced" him to resign and that he was held in "house arrest".

An interview from today destroying those nonsense lies in person;

. .

Al-Jazeera should worry about making up more lies about Qatari pilgrims being denied access to Makkah and Madinah and being harassed. When exposed by their own citizens (Qatari pilgrims), such news is nowhere to be found.

Disgusting Qatari propaganda pamphlet which is working overtime 24/7.

I am seriously thinking that KSA should have invaded that tiny fiefdom. I am sure that a deal with Trump could have been worked out.

The problem is that they have their supporters in the US and elsewhere too.. just look at it as interests.. that is how we should see it and act on it..

The only thing that is getting Hariri back is Israel as Israel is scared that with out Hariri Hezbollah will be unleashed.

Israelis fear war b/c Hezbollah promise to return back Golan mountains in future war.
both Hezbollah and Iran said in the war they just attack Israelis directly and immediately.
so it does not matter who will attack, for sure Israelis are one side of war.

His trip back still doesn't negate the fact that the Saudis kidnapped him or coerced him to resign as untrue.

Harriri is hostage to those who bankrolled him . . . I.e the Saudis.

I believe, the move was that the Saudis keep Harriri in Saudi and the Israelis attack Lebanon. The Israelis backed out ... which left the Saudis holding the Harriri bag.

Well spotted sir.
Israel cannot fight Hezbollah even with Saudi support and the political crisis in Lebanon. Meanwhile western powers , the mouth pieces of Israelis, actually represented Israeli position.
Looks like he forgot his lines. He had to look over at his Saudi overlords to remind him what they told him to say.

He is truly scared and embarrassed. This is what happens when you sell your own brothers/people to Saudis' filthy dollars.
He should remember his father,

In the meantime his , Sa'ad's , aunt has threatened Ale-Saud of telling the truth about her brother's assassination. Must wait and see the result of this موش و گربه بازی.

Whether he will actually be traveling back to Lebanon is still to be seen, one can make anyone say anything on tv under duress. For me the bigger concern was the comment by Saudi minister Thamer al-Sabhan that Hizbullah's inclusion in parliament and cabinet is a declaration of war by Lebanon. I mean how stupid and insensitive can one be.

You are are a bloody monarchy, rest of the world is not. Lebanon is a democracy and Hizbullah is a political reality of that country. Sidelining it will only result in chaos and can lead to another civil war. But do they care.

The Saudi regime is falling right into Iranian hands with the moves they made in the past couple of years, starting from attack on Yemen. Iranians are not losing anything, on the contrary they are gaining more and more influence in the region. After two years of bloody conflict, where the kingdom spent billions and lost quite a few good men, Houthis are still controlling enough sea ports or air strips that they can receive as alleged a 800 KM ranged missile and have the ability to launch it to target Riyadh. The campaign was an utter disaster and instead of backing down Saudis are getting themselves involved in even more conflicts.

Iran is a clear winner here. If the only ploy here is to engage Hizbullah within Lebanon so that it can not help Assad in exploiting the vacuum left by the destruction of Isis, then its stupid. It will give even more influence to the Iranians in Lebanon and Syria. What if this time they send their regulars, is the GCC, well just the KSA and UAE actually, ready to engage Iran militarily. If the Yemen campaign is an example to take then I am not really hopeful for the Arab success in such a scenario, it will be a campaign of attrition and Iran easily can take much more losses than the Arab allies.

But I believe this is all being done by MBS to consolidate his power base in the kingdom. An external threat, an exaggerated one will give him time to solidify his position, remove any opposition and push his reforms while the nation is distracted by that threat.

. . .
"Did I say that right? Can you let me go now?"
Where do you wanna go? we've just started the show with a lot of fire works, contortionist and lots of clowns ....
.. have you missed the wonderful job we've done in Yemen? much more bigger than been prepared just for you ...
