NEW DELHI: Swedish defence majorSaab has offered to collaborate with India to develop the sea version of itsfighter aircraft Gripen with transfer of technology.

"We have a great opportunity for technology transfer," Ulf Nilsson, head of Saab's aeronautics division said as he spoke about the naval version of the Gripen and the ongoing project of the DRDO to develop the naval version of the LCA Tejas.

Asked who will pay for the cost of the development, he said, "There is a cost for everything. But you can always talk about different investment schemes. If you see there are other potential customers...you can do it jointly with Brazil. Thailand is also a potential customer for Sea Gripen".

While the navy supports the naval version of the indigenously developedLCA Tejas, it is concerned about uncertainty over the commitment of the Indian Air Force to the LCA Mk 2 fighters, which have been long delayed and are the basis for the naval LCA.

The IAF has recently announced orders for a total of 120 LCA aircraft, with three modifications to the existing version of Tejas, which are below the LCA Mk2 standard.

Navy chief Admiral R K Dhowan had recently said the Navy was committed to the project and will have to see that the version of the LCA Mk2 meets the force's requirements in totality.

The Indian Navy is likely to commission aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, under construction in Cochin, in 2018. However, it is not clear if the naval LCA will be ready by then.

Saab has already done a feasibility study and they say that they have identified all the modifications that need to be done to the Gripen to create a naval version.

However, the biggest drawback for the Saab is that Sweden does not have an aircraft carrier and hence development of even a prototype is a problem.

Sorry all market for SAAB's Grippen have been ended. Their is no buyer, as they already have their pocket full with mig29k, LCA mk2- naval, and might with Rafale-M. Try Brazil and Thailand or build a carrier for sweeden or give order to India to build one for you.

Weren't they trying to offer this to Brazil?

Important points
  1. Swedish defence majorSaab has offered to collaborate with India to develop the sea version of itsfighter aircraft Gripen with transfer of technology.
  2. Asked who will pay for the cost of the development, he said, "There is a cost for everything. But you can always talk about different investment schemes. If you see there are other potential customers...you can do it jointly with Brazil. Thailand is also a potential customer for Sea Gripen".

  4. However, the biggest drawback for the Saab is that Sweden does not have an aircraft carrier and hence development of even a prototype is a problem
In short
  • Saab has done "Research" for "modifications" to make Sea Gripen
  • Saab wants India to buy Sea Gripen with full TOT and use the often diplomatic term "Collaborate"
  • Saab says "there is a cost to everything but it can be an investment (meaning i bring tech you bring everything else.. so open your bank balance for me !!!)
  • Saab says export potential there (Thailand.. my god i did nt knew that they needed sea gripen - a paper concept)
SAAB wants to clearly kill LCA program by hook or by crook.. Saab is desperate.. Articles in last 1 month twice shows how much they have become desperate.. Closer to signed Rafale signature and now apparent clarity about price, the more they are desperate to see it sabotaged.. Get ready for some new Boeing, LM, Saab, EF, Mig, Sukhoi all to announce new marketing schemes and articles ....

and for Saab offer, here is my personal honest and humble opinion

Exactly, we should ban and dis associate ourselves from such paid journalists and folks like Saab who is desperate too kill our LCA program. Very aptly said Sir..

The farther away from Gripen, the better.
Very true..

Did you see the export potential customer .. Thailand? Not even say BD, Sri Lanka, Singapore, or even any western countries..
They want a light fighter off from ACC.. Good but which ACC... Thailand's ACC HTMS Chakri Narubet of 1995-96 time is for VSTOL jets.. that ACC is smallest in the world with around 12K tonnes displacement.. Its air wing can be max 8-10 fixed wing birds and 4-5 rotor wings. There hanger itself can house i guess max 8-10 birds

Is that export potential?

Saab people think We are fools for investing for 10 jets for export potential???
