- The Eurofighter Typhoon is a costly toy that the Luftwaffe doesn't really need. By the time the Typhoon made its maiden flight, the Saab Gripen had most of its kinks worked out already, its cost is half that of the EF in both acquisition and maintenance and completely sufficient for the Luftwaffe's requirements.
- Speaking of Typhoons, only 8 of the 100+ are combat ready at a given time, exactly what is needed for the two QR flights + backups. If the enemy comes a-knocking, they better do so with enough heads-up. - The fairly new MH90 may not fly over sea water, lest it instantly start rusting. Apparently, noone foresaw the remote possibility of a naval helicopter encountering salt water.
- The A400M is not brand new. Its maiden flight was ten years ago, having been stuck in development hell since the 90's. There's nothing groundbreaking about it, it serves the same purpose as the vast majority of all planes, "carry shit from point A to point B".
- With the decommissioning of the Gepard (AAA turret on Leopard I chassis) and Roland (SAM on Marder chassis), there are no AFV's with serious AA capacity. The only AA is now stationary or shoulder-mounted (good'ol Stinger).
- Last but not least, the new frigate class 'Baden-Württemberg' is a cluster ****. Protective paint that will jump off the hull if you look at it funny, malfunctioning software, deficiencies in fire security. Last month, the lead ship was returned to the yard for a complete overhaul, straight from the shakedown cruise in the Baltic. According to the crew, it is a "complete disappointment".
I know a few guys in the force who can expand this list ad nauseam. The suppliers and developers are phoning it in at every turn and not suffering any consequences. One big factor in this seems to be the Defence Ministry's legal department who reportedly rely on garden-variety contract forms that don't even mention 'contractual penalties'.
