Russia's Defense Ministry confirmed reports on Thursday that a Su-27 fighter aircraft had crashed in the Moscow region.

“On June 9 at 10:25 [local time, 07:35 GMT], a Su-27 belonging to the Russian Aerospace Forces crashed in the Moscow region while returning to the base airfield after a planned flight. The pilot died. The flight was conducted without ammunition, there is no destruction on the ground," the ministry said in a statement.

Russia's Aerospace Forces have suspended Su-27 flights after a fatal crash in the Moscow region on Thursday, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

"Su-27 flights have been suspended at the decision of the commander until the reasons behind the crash in Moscow region are determined. According to preliminary data, the crash was caused by technical failure," the ministry said in a statement.

"The ministry said the pilot steered the plane away from a community and did not have time to eject before the crash, Tass said."

The pilot performed all the necessary operations to divert the plane from a populated area, the press office said.
"The pilot had no time for ejecting," the Defense Ministry said.

The law-enforcers who were present at the disaster scene told TASS that a pilot had tried to bring the plane out of the dive to avoid falling on residential buildings that were located some 200 meters from the crash site.

he didn't have the time ?

he was a aerobatic display team ace, wonder what happened in that twin engine jet, if they were practicing, how high he was etc..

Possibly he continues to attempt to fly the plane, so it would not crash and cause many non-military casualties (i.e. he didn't have time left, once he got the plane away from urban structures)

Maybe he lost consciousness. Being a pilot of Russian knights is not an easy task tbh.

Perhaps the aircraft was inverted and too low thus ejecting would be hopeless or he possible ejected but the aircraft was at 180 degrees and too low.

Speed, reaction time and altitude all play factors. The aircraft could have been traveling very low and fast when a problem occurred to where there was only enough time to divert the aircraft.

I remember during an air show a Mig-29 lost one engine due to a birth, the aircraft was flying fairly low and slow and the pilot also steered the aircraft away from the crowed. He didn't eject until the aircraft was in a nose dive, the parachute only opened a few feet from the ground and I don't even think it fully opened. I remember in an interview the pilot said the shockwave from the exploding aircraft helped cushion his landing.

RIP

He saved many lives.

@ptldM3 , what is the average age of Su-27 airframes in service?
