Plus the article becomes weirdly specific on mentioning the budget. Its also just as likely the sub was detected and the military didn't say anything, its not like the sub was going to launch nukes or anything, so it wasn't a big threat.
I know a few submariners who are high school friends and they are a closed lips lot when it comes to surface combatants. The thing with submariners it that no one on a sub is clueless on what are the sub's capabilities and what the sub is doing at that time. It is a community that is quite 'cliquish' precisely because of the fact that a sub can go places where no one expects them to go and to be. According to my friends, the only thing that limits a sub is weapons launch, else everything they do in peace time is 99.999% applicable to war.

Spare me from your hoopla.I happen to know a physicist from Russian academy of sciences formerly involved in developing geomapping and detection systems for soviet surveillance sats and making remote sensing systems and he who now works as an geophysicist for Tatneft to map hydrocarbon deposits.

The US Navy, specifically the submariners, have no problems with being reputed as incompetents and inferior to anyone else's submarine force. Sling away, guys...

You can spin it any way you wan't gambit, but the fact is that US Navy failed miserably,:lol: in the event of war that Akula could of hit the US mainland with cruise missiles with out the US knowing what hit them.

And just wait until our equivalent of sea wolf class goes into service.:whistle:

The Akula is of 1980s vintage and we have successfully tracked yours all that time. Putting 1990s' technology can only help so far. Take a look at your own overall military condition before you start to boast.

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:..HAHA.

BTW, is there a difference in detection under water, and above water (airplanes). What are the major differences?

I know Sonar uses sound and Radar radio, but the affects that water has on RADAR and SONAR.

Radar is practically worthless in water, unless you want to use the meters length HF/VHF/UHF bands, and even then its utility is limited in range.

Sonar is affected by salinity and temperature gradients.
