Russian-Indian work on 5G fighter to go ahead without extra deal
Air Force News — By RIA Novosti on June 14, 2010 at 4:25 am

Russian aircraft holding Sukhoi has no plans to sign additional agreements creating a joint venture with its Indian partners in the production of a fifth-generation fighter, the general director said on Friday.

Russian Sukhoi holding and Indian Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) agreed in early 2010 to jointly develop a fifth-generation stealth fighter jet.

Sukhoi head Mikhail Pogosyan had said that an additional agreement would be signed specifying the Indian role in the project, but on Friday he said that the Russian company hoped work would begin soon without any such deal.

"We don't plan to sign a joint venture. We have agreed on joint work with our Indian colleagues," Pogosyan said.

He said the joint work could be carried out under the current agreement.

"We will do our part of the work, our Indian counterparts theirs," Pogosyan said. "At the initial stage it is not necessary to have a joint venture."

Earlier, HAL was reported to be seeking a 25% share in design and development in the project.

Russia has been developing its fifth-generation fighter since the 1990s. The current prototype, known as the T-50, was designed by the Sukhoi design bureau and built at a plant in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, in Russia's Far East.

Russian officials have already hailed the fighter as "a unique warplane" that combines the capabilities of an air superiority fighter and attack aircraft

UAC, HAL halt plan for joint venture on FGFA

India and Russia have stepped away from plans to form a joint venture (JV) to support the two countries' initial efforts to develop and construct a fifth-generation fighter aircraft (FGFA), Russian state media has reported.

Previous statements from officials over the past two years have indicated that the FGFA would be created by a JV between Russia's United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) and India's state-owned company Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

However, Mikhail Pogosyan, chief executive of Sukhoi, which has been involved in the early design of the FGFA, said on 11 June that although both countries will continue joint development of the aircraft, the work will progress under existing arrangements. He indicated that a JV may be created at a later stage in the aircraft's development.

In comments published by RIA Novosti, Pogosyan said: "We don't plan to sign a joint venture. We have agreed on joint work with our Indian colleagues. We will do our part of the work, our Indian counterparts will do theirs. At the initial stage it is not necessary to have a joint venture."

The two countries have signed several inter-governmental agreements over the co-development and co-production of the FGFA, although a contract to signal the start of work has not been finalised.

Sukhoi has previously estimated that the programme will cost more than USD10 billion, while Indian Defence Minister A K Antony confirmed in March the programme will be funded equally by New Delhi and Moscow.

The platform, which is expected to enter service during India's 13th five-year plan period (2018-22), forms a key part of a Russian-Indian technology agreement that was signed in December 2009.

The Indo-Russian Inter-Governmental Commission for Military Technical Cooperation (IRIGC-MTC) formally extends the two countries' military partnership until the end of this decade as well as securing extensive after-sales support for Russian-made materiel in service with the Indian armed forces.

In addition to the FGFA, the agreement supports the joint development of a multirole transport aircraft (MRTA). This programme is also scheduled to be carried out by UAC and HAL.

I thought Think tanks were supposed to be subjective ? :what:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

If any one read the article this mean we get the plane sooner and with less delays.

Either way India may get the Russian Version of the plane first followed by the FGFA.

I don't think your being very accurate . :what:

There were numerous statements made regarding Intellectual rights and technology transfer , HAL is in fact studying Sukhoi documents right now , other wise they would not be able to do any of the development work
