What's new

Russian documentary on INS Vikramaditya, beautiful visuals :)

VERY cool @janon!! This is certainly going to be a feather in the IN's cap with those K/KUB on board!

+ cool to see an IAF MIG-29UPG being IFR via buddy-buddy refuelling at 17.53
Also i find it interesting that none of the Russian/Mig pilots are using the TOPSIGHT-I HMDS during this late stage in flight testing off the Viky. You'd have thought they'd want to integrate/test all the systems at once for final certification/clearance.

Nice catch, didn't noticed the UPG. The Topsight wasn't present at any of the testflights of the UPG in Russia, afaik also not of the Indian K, which is why I suspected that the pic that you recently posted, must be one of the UPG's that were already delivered to IAF.

well long range sams will be added only by 2015-2016 and till then just CIWS and onboard aircrafts for its protection. But considering other destroyers and frigates along with Viki in CBG, air defence disadvantage will be negated.
I seriously doubt that it will sail with a full fledged CBG..might be a destroyer.

And why wouldn't it sail with a full-fledged CBG?? This is going to be the flag-ship of the IN, why would the IN not give the best possible protection to it?

great video.. Wish it had English sub. interesting landing sequence at night at the end.

I mean the fighter being refuelled is an IAF MIG-29UPG 100%, yes the fighter acting as a refueller is a MIG-29K test a/c belonging to RIA Novosti.

And at what point do you see a HMDS bro?

No no bro, the LEAD plane is a K/KUB belonging to RIA Novosti, the plane being refuelled is a UPG. The first 3 IAF MIG-29B/KBUs were sent to Russia to be modernised, the remaining 60 or so will be upgraded in India by HAL.

Ah cool, I get it now. BTW, I think you mean the test aircraft belongs to mig corp; RIA Novosti is a news agency, and it will be a dystopian day when they operate combat aircrafts!

I thought the pilot is wearing an HDMS at 17.35 and 18.18?

This is not going to be the flag ship of IN, INS Vikrant will be the flag ship..consider it a stop gap arrangement..
You know the definition of CBG, tell me how we are going to augment with that..

Both will have similar size and capabilities, so until IAC 2 comes, we will have 2 flag ships and both have to sail with a fully fledged CBG, since they would be defenceless against sub attack otherwise.
We already have Frigats, Destroyers, at least 1 SSN and support vessels to keep blue water operations running.

I think the IAC-1 would have the edge and by some margin given it is a much more modern ship based on contemporary designs and especially on the electronic/sensor side (see MF=STAR/RAN-40L combo). Despite being a simiarly sized ship to the Viky the IAC-1 should simply be the better, more refined, boat over all.

NOPE! It is indeed MiG 29UPG of IAF.

1. Look at the IAF roundels.
2. The tell-tale hump.
3. Last but not the least, look at the fin flash, the indian flag ; also the KBU series definitely belongs to UPG MiG 29s of IAF.
Isnt it the Russian policy that for foreign sales of aircraft, the RuAF first takes delivery and then the aircraft are transferred to the foreign nations via RuAF? I meant about the MiG29Ks onboard the Vikramaditya.

That one you mentioned there is something I was pushing people to think about when it comes to a full fledged CBG. and apart from that which sub will escort Vicky? until the Scorpenes come.

Obviously we will have two flag ships since each ship is a different class and will represent its own class. But Sancho, we are talking about Vicky here and this ship though adds to my pride is still a stop gap check, practically speaking from IN's point of view. They bought this one since the air defense ship, rechristened Vikrant was getting delayed.

That's what the Frigats will be meant for, while the destroyers will aim more on attacking surface targets. Scorpenes are not really useful for the CBG, since they are too slow and range limited unlike SSNs. The Nerpa will do that for Vicky, while an indigenous SSN might be ready by the time IAC 1 will arrive too.
Personally, if the Arihant nuclear propulsion is ready and mature enough, I would have integrated it into the first 4 x Scorpenes, since it was a plain nonsense decision to take them as basic diesel-electric subs. But the sub procurement policy of IN is ridiculous anyway, so lets wait and see.

Flag ships are usually the biggest and most capable ships of a fleet and here Vicky and IAC1 won't have much differences in terms of size or the number of used fighters. Vicky was procured as a stop gap measure, but that doesn't make it less capable than IAC1.
