Russian arms exporter denies MiG-31 fighter contract with Syria

What role would the MIG-31 play in the Syrian air force? Will it primarily be used for surveillance/recon or will it be used as high altitude interceptors? Syria is not even that big of a country so I don't see why it would need interceptors in this day and time.

The R-33 is not the only missles the Mig-31 carries, and most of the missles the Mig-31 does carry are long range.
Standard MiG-31 is armed only with R-33, R-40 and short range R-60.

In fact you are wrong, the Mig-25 shot down an F-18 over the middle east and Mohommed Rayyan had atleast 8 confirmed kills against much more agile aircraft such as F-5's. And we are talking about a Mig-25 and not a Mig-31 which is better suited for air combat.
F-18 is not really confirmed, also one case cant prove much. During Iran Iraq war MiG-25s shot down several F-4, but then Iranian air force was in poor shape. Also MiG-21 and Mig-23 shot down much more Iranian jets. Syrian and Lybian MiG-25s failed to shot down anything.

Russian service Mig-31s have been upgraded to Mig-31BM standart. Among the improvements, it received a new multimode radar, a glass cockpit and datalink, and the ability to carry new air to air missiles including the Vympel R-73, R-77, and R-33S and the K-37M and air to ground missiles such as the

The MiG-25/31 are very interesting jets with some unique capabilities that should not be overlooked. They were designed in the era when ultra-high-speed bombers like the XB-70 appeared to be the primary threat to the USSR. To counter a mach-3 bomber at 65,000 feet, you need a mach-3 interceptor.

On the weak side - it is an interceptor. It literally cannot turn. It is designed to go very fast, straight line.

With high altitude penetrating bombers rendered obsolete by SAMs, the MiG-25/31 saw life as a recon bird, and very importantly, as a high-altitude penetrating fighter targeting AWACs and other high $$ assets. Intercepting a mach 2.5 target at 65,000 feet is not a trivial matter for a conventional fighter, although the new breed of A2A missiles has helped tremendously vs. the MiG-31.

what was that tactic eagle drivers call.. wall of eagles... stacked on top of each other.. to protect against such attempts??

It was something we practiced often in the F-15 simulator, called the "high-fast flyer" intercept. The target was always a MiG-25 or 31, at 60,000 feet+ and mach 2.5 or so. The AIM-7 had weak kinematics compared to the AIM-120, so the profile has probably changed, but essentially, it went something like this, starting from maybe 45,000 feet:

1) Jettison ALL external fuel tanks.
2) Go full AB and leave it there.
3) Accelerate to mach 2+ or as fast as it'll go
4) Begin the climb so as to place the HUD steering cue for the missile in the best possible geometry.

This is from an F/A-18 but the display is similar. The circle expands and contracts based upon the overall geometry of the shot. The dot (lower right) needs to be inside the circle, optimally right in the middle. This sets the jet up for an optimum shot. We'd pull a bit harder to put the dot slightly lower in the circle.

Topping out above 60,000 feet, we'd always pickle 2 or 3. Again, with the AIM-120, it's probably different and much easier.

We weren't supposed to practice this outside the simulator, because in peace time, flight above 50,000 feet required a pressure suit (full or partial) - decompression above 50,000 feet is often fatal because of severe evolution of nitrogen gas in the body... the bends.

But we'd go above 50,000' on occasion, just because it was cool. The sky is partially blackened, and if you have a crisp horizon, you really can see the Earth curvature. Just barely, but it was there.:smitten:

Bring the money we bring the plane with bvr to even things up

We need to bring our national deficit down just like US does by selling stuff to india

Venazuella 100 JF17
Iran 100 JF 17 thunders
Syria 100 JF 17 Thunders

We need some fat contracts like that to cut down our 75 billion dollar deficit

With Venazuella and Iran we could also get Discounted rates on Oil - which is critical to our Industry and we SHOULD act on these because of energy crisi in our country

Getting Oil at 60% market price would help us cut down our deficit to 10 billion in 4-5 years

Again really 10-15 billion earned from JF17 thunder sales
Then 4-5 billion in other weapons upgrades

And 5 years Pakistan saves 20 billion on oil cost


We can reduce our National Deficit by 50% and give a thunbs down to IMF as well go cry me a river sorta speak

We normally can cut our deficit by 10 billion in 2-3 times so combined with 35 billion in projects with Iran-Syria-Venezuella

We will only have 10-13 billion left to pay and that is managible

Problem is that JF-17 uses Russian engine and thus needs Russian permission for export. And Russians are interented in selling their planes.

I like your thinking Azad, although a couple of things needs to be sorted out first i.e. engine, radar etc.
What's the status regarding orders for the JF17?
