Commander of the forces said that Russian Airborne Forces will be armed with Kornet-D1 combat missile systems in two years.

ULYANOVSK (Sputnik) – The Russian Airborne Forces will be armed with Kornet-D1 combat missile systems in two years, Commander of the forces Col. Gen. Andrey Serdyukov said Friday.

"Joint state tests will be conducted in the next two years and the new self-propelled anti-tank Kornet-D1 systems will be deployed," Serdyukov said.

ULYANOVSK (Sputnik) – The D-10 parachute for the Russian Ratnik infantry combat gear will be modernized in 2018, Col. Gen. Andrei Serdyukov, the commander of the Russian Airborne Forces, said Friday.

"In 2018, we plan to carry out research and development to modernize the D-10 airborne parachute system and a reserve parachute for landing of personnel in the Ratnik infantry combat gear," Serdyukov said in Ulyanovsk.

According to Serdyukov, by 2018 the research and development work to create a line of multipurpose platforms and parachute-cargo systems for landing weapons, military equipment and cargo with a weight from 0.5 to 18 tonnes, will be complete.

Ratnik, referred to as a system designed for a "soldier of the future," includes 59 pieces of equipment, comprising firearms, body armor, optical, communication and navigation devices, as well as life support and power supply systems.

The infantry combat system, protecting nearly 90 percent of the soldier’s body, is designed to improve Russian Armed Forces combat capabilities and connectivity.

MOSCOW. May 3 (Interfax) - Russia is set to create a hypersonic Mach 12 aircraft, according to materials of the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

There is an assignment to design aircraft moving at a speed of Mach 12, the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences said in a presentation in Moscow on Wednesday.

United Aircraft Corporation Vice-President for Innovations Sergei Korotkov said the corporation was interacting with the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in a number of areas.

"We are currently working in such areas as hypersonic speed, new materials, equipment, and a navigation system based on new physical principles," Korotkov said.

NOVOSIBIRSK. May 3 (Interfax-AVN) - The United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) is interested in the development of planes with alternative engine types, including electric ones, Sergei Korotkov, UAC vice-president on innovations, said on Wednesday.

"We understand today that any engine, a turboprop, turbojet or internal combustion one, emits a lot of pollutants in the air, which does not make people very happy," Korotkov told reporters.

A lot of work has been done on that, including that related to electricity, he said.

"We are considering other sources of energy that rotate mechanisms. Today, such energy sources have been tested in drones, which operated rather successfully in the south and could maintain movement in the air for a long time," Korotkov said.

It is also necessary to resolve the issue of power supply to equipment installed onboard planes, which "have become very power-intensive," he said.

"We can already use new power systems on passenger planes," Korotkov said.

MOSCOW, April 28. /TASS/. Russian Tupolev Tu-160 and Tu-95MS strategic bombers and about 50 other aircraft and helicopters have taken part in a control check of Aerospace Force units and formations, Aerospace Force Commander-in-Chief Colonel General Viktor Bondarev said on Friday.

"The control check of units and formations of the Aerospace Force has confirmed the readiness of all armed service branches for effectively performing their tasks within the established time limits and defending our facilities against existing and future aerospace attack means," the commander said.

As part of the combat readiness check, the crews of Tu-95MS strategic missile carriers practiced re-deployment to operational aerodromes and simulated launches of airborne cruise missiles while Tu-160 bombers performed flights at supersonic speed.

As the Russian Aerospace Force commander-in-chief said, the crews of Sukhoi Su-27 fighter jets intercepted aerial targets while helicopters launched rockets and airborne munitions against ground targets at a practice range.

Also, air defense teams practiced detecting, tracking and notionally destroying enemy aircraft whose flights were imitated by the crews of Long-Range, Military Transport, Tactical and Army Aviation.

"Overall, the check involved more than 50 aircraft, about 100 weapon systems of antiaircraft missile forces and radio-technical troops (the S-400, S-300, Pantsyr-S air defense missile complexes and radars)," Bondarev said.

MOSCOW, May 2. /TASS/. Russia’s most advanced Kamov Ka-52K shipborne helicopters have completed the first stage of trials, Russian Helicopters rotocraft manufacturer, part of state hi-tech corporation Rostec, reported on Tuesday.

"The Ka-52K helicopters have completed the first stage of sea trials. The helicopters are currently staying at the Kamov base where specialists are completing assessing their condition and their specific assemblies after performing tasks in difficult weather conditions," the company said in a statement.

Two Ka-52K helicopters took part in the trials, the statement said.

Russian Helicopters Group Sales Director Vladislav Savelyev said the results of the trials suggested that these helicopters could be placed aboard an aircraft-carrying cruiser and could successfully accomplish assigned missions.

"The helicopter features unique characteristics; however, one sea voyage is not enough to understand how its engines, assemblies, avionics, control and armament systems operate in a sea environment. The design bureau’s work will continue as part of trials, including aboard an aircraft-carrying ship," the company’s press office quoted Savelyev as saying.


The Ka-52K is based on a range of shipborne rotocraft accepted by the Russian Navy for service. This range includes Ka-25, Ka-27, Ka-29 and Ka-31 helicopters.

The Ka-52K is designed to carry out patrol missions, provide fire support for amphibious assaults and deal with anti-amphibious assault defense at the forefront and in tactical depth.

The KA-52K differs from the baseline version by its shortened folding wing specifically developed for carrying heavy armament and the mechanism of folding rotor blades allowing it to compactly fit into a ship’s compartment below the deck.

The Ka-52 shipborne versions’ reduced sizes allow increasing the number of these choppers aboard a ship. The crew’s armored cabin and the catapult system allow pilots to safely leave the helicopter. The helicopter’s shipborne version also features a rescue system for people in distress at sea.

MOSCOW, May 3. /TASS/. Russia has developed the main engine for the PAK FA (T-50) 5th-generation fighter jet, United Aircraft-Building Corporation Chief Designer Sergei Korotkov said at a TASS press conference on Wednesday.

"Today the next-generation engine has been actually developed and soon trials will begin for it together with the T-50, for which it has been created. The design bureau is carrying out specific work. We are working on these projects together with them," the chief designer said.

The T-50 is the 5th-generation fighter jet that made its debut flight in 2010. It was reported earlier that the T-50 serial production will begin in 2017, after which the fighter jet will enter service with Russia’s Aerospace Force. According to the latest data, the first stage of trials is expected to be completed in 2018.

It was reported earlier that the T-50 with the new engine would perform its first flight in the fourth quarter of 2017. The 5th-generation fighter jet is currently equipped with the so-called 117S first-stage engine. The new engine has not yet received its name and is notionally called the second-stage engine.

Compared to previous-generation fighters, the T-50 features some unique characteristics, combining the functions of a strike aircraft and a fighter jet. Composite materials and innovation technologies, the plane’s aerodynamic layout and measures to reduce the engine’s visibility provide for the T-50’s low radar and infrared signature.

This allows considerably boosting its combat efficiency against air and ground targets at any time of the day or night under any weather conditions.

Russian media recently confirmed that the Kh-35E tactical air-launched anti-ship cruise missile was being incorporated aboard Russia's Sukhoi T-50 5th-generation stealth air superiority fighter. Speaking to Izvestia, Tactical Missiles Corporation chief designer Nikolai Vasilyev explained what makes the Kh-35 one of the best missiles in the world.


Speaking about the Kh-35's widespread deployment in the Russian Navy, and its popularity in other countries, including Algeria, India, Iran and Vietnam, among others, Vasilyev said that the high regard for the missile comes down in part to its universality.


"The Kh-35E is Russia's first universalized missile which can be used from various types of carriers," the chief engineer noted. "Before it, the classical approach was for different weapons systems…(aircraft, helicopters, ships and coastal defense systems) to use specially-created missiles for each. The development of such weapons was a very costly affair. Therefore, in order to optimize spending, it was decided to create a universalized missile that could be used from airplanes, helicopters, ships, coastal defense complexes and, in case of urgent need, from submarines."

Vasilyev noted, the main competitors to the Kh-35E include the American Harpoon and the French Exocet anti-ship missiles. Sweden and China have their own developments, the RBS-15 and the C-801, respectively, while Japan and North Korea are making an effort to develop them. "In general, any modern state engaged in maintaining the combat readiness of its military must have such weapons," the engineer said.

Asked to provide his assessment of how the Kh-35E would fare against the capabilities of these foreign analogues, Vasilyev explained that the fact that many sufficiently powerful countries without a domestic anti-ship missile program capability purchase the Russian weapons is a sign of their worth.


"Until recently, the American Harpoon was considered the top missile [in this class]. But the US supplied it only to its closest allies. For this reason, many countries went with 'budget' models, including Exocet and Chinese analogues like the C-801. I have often taken part in negotiations with foreign customers. For me as a developer, it's nice to hear when customers reach the conclusion that the Kh-35E is one of the best in its class. I can state with all responsibility that the Kh-35E and its Kh-35U modification not only hold their own against the foreign missiles, but in many respects are superior to them."


"A missile's combat effectiveness is determined by two factors," Vasilyev said. "The first factor is the missile itself, and its ability to hit targets. For example, a single missile will be enough to destroy a missile boat displacing 500-1,500 tons. But to reach this vessel, it will be necessary to send eight missiles, for example. Seven of them will be either shot down, or blocked by the enemy's electronic warfare systems. Only one will pass through and find its target. The stronger a missile's jamming resistance, the less missiles are needed. The use of highly protected warheads allows us to halve the amount of missiles necessary – to send not eight missiles, but only four."

The second criterion for a missile's effectiveness is the relative cost ratio between the weapon and its target, the senior engineer explained. "The engineering solutions providing our missiles with countermeasures resistance capability are a state secret. But what I can tell you is that the knowhow used in the Kh-35E is notably higher than that of its foreign analogues, including Harpoon."

Asked about the prospective use of the Tactical Missile Corporation systems aboard the latest ship designs for the Navy, such as the Project 23550 ice-class patrol ship, the designer explained that Russia is currently undergoing a paradigm shift in its weapons development model.

"There is a modern concept, which has been under active development over the last three to five years," Vasilyev noted. "This is the construction of universal platforms. Earlier, ships were developed as unique strike systems. Only one type of system could be installed aboard a ship — only the Uran-E [shipborne missile system] or only the Yakhont [supersonic anti-ship cruise missile], for example. As a result, the ship going into battle would be capable of solving only one combat task."

MOSCOW, May 15. /TASS/. The Kronstadt Group is working on artificial intelligence for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for military and civil usage, the company’s CEO Armen Isaakyan said in an interview with TASS.


"We strive to create AI management and software systems for any types of unmanned vehicles, not just for military purposes, but for civil usage as well, particularly for spheres that pose danger to people’s life and health, public order or infrastructure," he said.

According to Isaakyan, unmanned aerial vehicles will be unified to form "swarms of drones" in the future.


"It will, undoubtedly, happen in the future. To date, it’s too early to talk about such "swarms", except for some secret programs, perhaps. Still, there already exist completely autonomous AI operation systems that provide the means for UAV clusters, when they fulfill missions autonomously, sharing tasks between them, and interact," Isaakyan noted.

The Kronstadt Group experts are also working on a UAV defense system. "I believe such drone defense systems will become obligatory for all in the future. We are also mulling over it. That’s a promising issue our specialists are working on," he said.

KHABAROVSK, May 22. /TASS/. A unit of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) from the Eastern Military District’s Amur River valley has been engaged in tracking potential fires and floods, the press service for the Eastern Military District reported today.

"The Eastern Military District’s unmanned aerial vehicles located in the Amur Region, the Jewish Autonomous Region, and the Khabarovsk Region have started monitoring areas around military facilities and communities for possible wildfires and river flooding," the statement said.

The military district’s representative specified that the Orlan-10 UAVs daily check over 1,000 square kilometers, focusing on the most endangered areas where floods or forest fires are possible. The Orlan drones are equipped with infrared sensitive cameras to quickly detect even small fires.

The Amur River formation headquarters conduct round-the-clock monitoring of the fire and flood situation in the area of deployment for a rapid response.

"We cooperate with the municipal authorities and Emergency Ministry officials," the regional press service reported.

The first flight of Russia's new high-speed helicopter is expected to take place until 2025, Deputy Defense Minister Yury Borisov said Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The 10th HeliRussia exhibition, the country's annual international helicopter industry event opened at Moscow's Crocus Expo center on May 25.

The exhibition is touted by experts as a venue to promote a spate of sophisticated Russian helicopters, including the Ka-62, Ka-226 and Mi-38.

"We have plans for a new state armament procurement program for 2018-2025. These plans include scientific research work with the transition to the design stage, and at the end of this period we are planning to carry out a maiden flight of this high-speed helicopter," Borisov told reporters on the sidelines of the HeliRussia-2017 exhibition.

MOSCOW, May 24. /TASS/. Russian Space Systems holding company (an affiliate of Roscosmos) will pool efforts with the Helicopters of Russia to develop an advanced artillery targeting system for the Ka-52 helicopter (Alligator), the RSS press service has said.

"The new system will enhance the accuracy of the gun’s traversing system and enhance the speed and range of fire. Research and development to create a system of measuring angular movements of artillery systems in the vertical and horizontal planes will be carried out jointly with the Physical Measurements Research Institution NIIFI (an affiliate of the RSS)," the news release runs.

The NIIFI’s permanent clients are the NPO Saturn, Yakovlev Design Bureau, affiliates of the Sukhoi company, Irkut corporation and others. NIIFI products are used in all latest models of Russian planes and helicopters - Ka-52, Sukhoi-35S, Yakovlev-130, T-50, and Sukhoi Superjet-100.

MOSCOW, May 25. /TASS/. Russian Helicopters Group has started the state trials of the Mil Mi-28NM helicopter, Russian Helicopters CEO Andrei Boginsky said on Thursday.

"We have already started [the state trials]," the chief executive said.

The Mi-28NM is the upgraded version of the Mi-28N ‘Night Hunter’ helicopter. The work on the new modification began in 2009. The Mi-28NM is expected to get a principally new surveillance radar, a new control system and other equipment. It will also be able to use precision weapons.

Russia has supplied its advanced President-S onboard defense systems to three countries and is negotiating further supplies with other customers, a representative of Concern Radio-electronic Technology (KRET), Vladimir Mikheev, told Sputnik.

Earlier, is was reported that a number of countries in the Middle East, Asia-Pacific and Latin America are interested in acquiring Russian President-S onboard defense systems (ODS) and Rychag-AV helicopter electronic warfare systems.

"Supplies to a number of countries are now underway: we have fulfilled our obligations to equip the systems with our Mi-17 and Mi-8 helicopters of various modifications, and in some cases the works were carried out on the territory of a foreign customer. Without specifying the countries, I can say that we are talking about it with three countries," Mikheev told Sputnik.

Mikheev also added that pre-contract negotiations on President-S deliveries are now taking place with a number of countries in North Africa, the Asia-Pacific region and Latin America.

The ODS is designed to protect planes and helicopters from being hit by missiles, air defense and anti-aircraft artillery. It detects and tracks incoming rockets, as well as repels them by directing laser rays at their multispectral optical seekers or jamming their radios.

VLADOVOSTOK, May 29. /TASS/. Russia’s Eastern Military District has received a new shipment of the Mil Mi-8AMTSh Terminator helicopters, the first in 2017, the district’s press service said in a statement on Monday.

"The new helicopters have been delivered to an airbase located in the Transbaikalia Territory. Before the delivery, the helicopters were inspected by technical experts from the airbase, while pilots conducted test flights," the statement reads.

However, the press service did not elaborate how many helicopters were included in the first shipment.

The Mi-8AMTSh helicopter was developed on the basis of the Mi-8AMT multipurpose helicopter. It is particularly equipped with satellite navigation system, infrared interpretation system and night vision devices for pilots. The helicopter can be equipped with various types of weapons, including guided missile complexes, attached to ejector racks on each side.

With a maximum take-off weight of 13,000 kilograms, the helicopter can fly at a maximum speed of 230 kilometers per hour.

GORKI, May 29. /TASS/. Russia will begin the trials of its new Ilyushin Il-112V military transport plane at the end of this year, Vice-Premier Dmitry Rogozin reported to Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on Monday.

"At the end of the year, we plan another aviation premiere - this is an Il-112V, a light military transport plane," Rogozin said.

In the vice-premier’s opinion, the year 2017 has become "rich in aviation premieres." At the beginning of the year, "a MiG-35 fighter jet took to the skies and recently the flights of a Ka-62 helicopter and an MC-21 airliner were held," Rogozin said.

Speaking about the Ka-62 helicopter, Rogozin said that the rotocraft was revolutionary in its design as it was 60% made of domestic composite materials.

"The helicopter’s trials will last several years - two or three years," the vice-premier said.

"The helicopter is being developed as a multipurpose machine. It has many options and a crew of 1-2. It can seat up to 15 passengers, carry two tonnes of cargoes in the cabin and 2.5 tonnes of cargoes on suspended equipment and has a flight altitude of up to 4.5 kilometers," the vice-premier said, describing the helicopter’s performance characteristics.

The new helicopter "is a multipurpose platform and has unique aerodynamic capabilities and thus will be used in very diverse areas, from the Arctic to mountainous terrain as a sanitary and passenger rotocraft," he said.

"It is in the medium segment of helicopters, which we now need, and up until now we have worked with modifications based on the Mi-8 but this helicopter is much lighter and that is why we are linking a whole family of helicopters with it," Rogozin said.

As Russian Prime Minister Medvedev said, the Mi-8 has been in service for long. This is generally a very reliable helicopter but this is the model of the mid-1960s and so new models should emerge to feature new technologies in the helicopter industry. In Medvedev’s estimate, the Ka-62 is precisely such a cutting-edge helicopter.

The Il-112V is a light military and transport plane with a maximum load of up to five tonnes. It is designated to transport personnel, military hardware, various types of armaments and other cargoes. The aircraft can be used at small unequipped aerodromes with both concrete-paved and soil-based runways. The plane is expected to be rolled out in two modifications: for civil aviation (the Il-112T) and military transport aviation (the Il-112V). It was reported earlier that the Russian Defense Ministry wanted to order 62 such planes.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Russian military is expecting to complete the final tests and commission the advanced Su-35S fighter jet by the end of 2017, Deputy Defense Minister Yury Borisov said Tuesday.

"At present, more than 50 [Su-35S] aircraft are being tested in units of the Russian Aerospace Forces. We are expecting that the state joint tests will be completed by the end of this year, and the aircraft will be adopted [for service]," Borisov said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia's Military Transport Aviation plans to receive three new Il-76MD-90A military transport aircraft in 2017, Commander of the Military Transport Aviation, Lt. Gen. Vladimir Benediktov, said.

"Last year, we received two such planes. This year, we plan to receive three aircraft… The plane's thrust-weight ratio and chassis have been enhanced. It has been equipped with more modern avionics systems. It exceeds the Il-76MD in terms of carrying capacity. The capabilities of the new aircraft have been increased by 30-40 percent," Benediktov told reporters.

According to the commander, Russia's Military Transport Aviation also plans to receive the first two Il-76MD-M planes in 2018.

"We are actively working on modernization of the Il-76MD basic aircraft. We are finishing tests at the enterprise, and next year, we plan to receive the first two models of the modernized Il-76MD-M aircraft, which will later replace the existing ones. This is a kind of an intermediate machine between Il-76MD and Il-76MD-90A," Benediktov said.

The Il-76MD-90A is a deeply modernized version of Russia's world-famous Il-76 aircraft, featuring a fully-digital flight control system, new avionics and PS-90A-76 engines with improved fuel efficiency systems. The aircraft was designed for parachuting and landing of military personnel, military equipment, cargoes, fuel and containers.
