The Irkutsk Aircraft Plant (IAZ) is assembling two Sukhoi Su-30SM multirole fighters for the Russian air force, Alexey Fedorov, president of the controlling Irkut corporation, said. The pair will be completed and subjected to flight trials by the end of this year.

The new version of the twin-seat Su-30 represents the baseline Su-30MKI with thrust vectoring developed for the Indian air force, but with modifications to meet Russian air force specifications, Fedorov said.

The service is seeking to procure 30 such aircraft, with a contract still being finalised.

"Hopefully, in 2012 we will be able to finalise a contract for 18 Su-30SMs for the Russian air force, with an option for a further 18 for the Russian navy air arm," Fedorov said.




The delivery of the Su-30SM to the Russian armed forces will end a long pause in their acquisition of IAZ-built fighters, after its last Su-30K interceptors and Su-27UB twin-seat operational trainers were handed over in the early 1990s.

It is understood that the decision to procure the Su-30SM was inspired by the successful use of industry-owned Su-30MKI/MKM operational-standard prototypes during Russia's August 2008 conflict with Georgia.

Its better for them to go for Su-30 MKis rather than open a production line for Su-35s...

It will be a copy of Indian ones apart from Israeli and French /Indian inputs.

Also its better for us as the spares logistics will be alive....

Russians had given us a solution for Spares and Logistics as they have helped us be in a position to develop near 100 % components here in India. So well I guess we have not much problem when it comes to spares, we issue global tender's for spares anyway.

by navy air arm it means it will still be operated from land but will be under jurisdiction of navy - doesnt mean it will operate from carriers- a bit like iaf placing mki's at andamna and nicobar( they are still under iaf jurisdiction but will be used in mainly anti naval operations)

Even there are some maritime versions of Mki and Jaguars for IAF . With these there is no need for Navy to operate Fighters from Shores.

I thought most planes in the world carried single seater fighters?

The Su-30MKI is probably the most successful defense project ever undertaken by India. It gave us a great fighter that combines Russian aircraft design and Western avionics. Unlike the equally good but sadly neglected Mig-29, the Su-27/30/35 family has seen commercial success so spare parts will not be a problem. It is cheap, 50-75% of the cost of the MRCA and cheaper than the F-16I/F18 SH. We gained valuable experience in weapons/systems integration and also got to license manufacture some aircraft.

Without the Su-30MKI, the IAF is still more than a match for the PAF with 400 frontline jets (M-29, M2K, Bison, Jaguar) versus a technologically inferior force of 90 F-16s/ JF-17 and 360 J-7/M-3. But add in the 270 Su-30 (along with the MRCA) in the mix, it’s a no-contest, both because its so superior to anything else and because of the large numbers we have been able to buy. Its like two sides fighting with knives and rocks and suddenly one of them turns up with a large group of battle tanks.
