The Russians are there to support their ally in the region, Assad. Defending his regime from attack has to be their goal.

Looks like they are saying 'we can't defend against strikes'.

Point is, that the original NATO was created by member states who where really threatened by USSR and the expansion of Communism. They had a mighty common enemy with solid expansive ideology.
And you suggest a Muslim NATO because Israel is your common enemy? Do you really believe that Israel is willing to take over the entire Muslim world, from Morocco to Indonesia?
