Prime Minister Keir Starmer of United Kingdom reaffirmed the country's commitment to helping Ukraine and making sure it in best possible position. This coincides with worries about how President Trump will handle US assistance going forward. Recently signed historic 100-Year Partnership deal between the UK and Ukraine which covers military, energy, scientific cultural and economic cooperation demonstrates the UK's commitment.
Starmer underlined the need of bringing front line under control and giving Ukraine tools and training it needs. In order to achieve this UK already pledged £3 billion ($3.6 billion) for lethal aid and in 2025, it will offer Ukraine greater military help than ever before. Starmer also announced an additional £40 million ($49 million) to aid Ukraine’s economic recovery post-conflict. The 100-year agreement aims to enhance military cooperation and fortify security in the Baltic Sea, Black Sea, and Azov Sea, as well as deter ongoing Russian hostility.
UK's commitment to Ukraine is seen as particularly important given concerns about a potential shift in US policy under President Trump. Leader of the Liberal Democrats Sir Ed Davey expressed his fears that Ukraine could be forced to surrender territory to Russia and that Trump's stance could lead to a negative outcome. Starmer promised that the UK will play its full part in peacekeeping efforts in Ukraine possibly including the deployment of British troops to monitor a ceasefire on ground.
