Russia: Two Strategic Bombers Reportedly Practice Nuclear Missile Strikes Against U.S. : News : Headlines & Global News

Two Russian strategic bomber jets reportedly practiced cruise missile attacks against targets in the United States during a training mission last week that defense officials said appeared to occur around the same time that NATO summit in Wales was held on Thursday and Friday, according to a report published on Monday in the Washington Free Beacon.

As part of a recent training mission, the pair of Russian Tu-95 Bear bombers were tracked flying over the Labrador Sea last week in the northern Atlantic Ocean near Iceland, Greenland and Canada's northeast.

Analysis of the flight indicated that the aircraft were conducting practice runs to a pre-determined "launch box"-an optimum point for firing nuclear-armed cruise missiles at U.S. targets, said defense officials familiar with intelligence reports, adding that each aircraft was capable of striking targets as far away as 1,800 miles since they were outfitted with six AS-15 nuclear-armed cruise missiles.

Although representatives for the U.S. Northern Command and Northern American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, declined to comment on the bomber flights in the North Atlantic, they told RT in an email Monday afternoon that they could not confirm the allegations printed by the Free Beacon.

However, neither the U.S. nor Canadian fighter jets were asked to intercept the alleged Bear-H bombers since the incident occurred outside the North American Air Defense Identification Zone.

Additional details of the incident that took place over the Labrador Sea, the stretch of the Atlantic between Greenland and Canada's Labrador Peninsula, could not be learned.

Meanwhile, "Google Earth analysis reveals that a Tu-95 launch box located in the Labrador Sea and firing AS-15 missiles would be in range of Ottawa, New York, Washington, and Chicago, and could reach as far south as the Norfolk Naval base," according to WFB.

"However, air-launched cruise missiles fired from that location and outside the air defense identification zone would be unable to reach Kings Bay, Georgia-the homeport for U.S. ballistic missile submarines and a key strategic nuclear target."

Last week, after officials from the U.S., Canada and other allied partners discussed the escalating crisis in eastern Ukraine and potential action that could be undertaken to counter perceived Russian aggression during the NATO summit, a Russian general called for Moscow to change its doctrine to include preemptive nuclear strikes on the United States and NATO last week, RT reported.

Gen. Yuri Yakubov, a senior Defense Ministry official, was quoted by the state-run Interfax news agency as saying that Russia's 2010 military doctrine should be revised to identify the United States and the NATO alliance as enemies, and clearly outline the conditions for a preemptive nuclear strike against them.

Yakubov said among other needed doctrinal changes, "it is necessary to hash out the conditions under which Russia could carry out a preemptive strike with the Russian Strategic Rocket Forces"-Moscow's nuclear forces.

Since Russia regards nuclear arsenal as the main element of their great power status, they frequently issue public nuclear threats, Mark Schneider, a former Pentagon strategic policymaker and currently senior analyst at the National Institute for Public Policy, said.

"Putin began what he called bomber 'combat patrols' in 2007 and they continue," Schneider said. "They are designed to intimidate as well as practice nuclear bomber attacks."

Meanwhile, Admiral Cecil Haney, commander of the U.S. Strategic Command, which is in charge of nuclear forces, said last month that he is concerned both by large-scale Russian nuclear exercises and by increased bomber flights near the United States.

"Clearly, we at the U.S. Strategic Command do monitor the strategic environment," Haney said noting large-scale nuclear exercises during the Ukraine crisis.

"Any nation state has the right to train," he added. "It's just interesting how that information [on nuclear forces exercises] is readily available on YouTube. Clearly, the actions associated with Ukraine are problematic."

I dont understand why Russian defense planner feel that they will send their decades old Tu-95/etc to bomb US and and US will have NO answer to it...Pathetic! its just guts that neither Russia nor US has, against each other! accept it!! ?

Russia still wants to act as if it was the Soviet Union. Just because they have oil and oil prices have risen during these past decade, thus giving them some cash(it had nothing to do with Putin as others think), so they think with this makes them a world superpower like the U.S . lool They dont understand they are still a long way from there. So of course what is left of them is to cause some trouble to litle neighbours in eastern Europe and send some of their Soviet Bombers close to U.S shores to show they are still relevant.
They dont understand that Today and tommorows war wont be fought with weapons, but it will be economic, cyber warfare/espionage, industrialization, high tech industries/companies trying to dominate countries, etc. In all these domain Russia still lags way behind the west/U.S

They need to get their industries/manufacturing in order, before they can stand a chance of even challenging the west/U.S. They dont have any of that(as we witnessed during the recent sanctions, which showed just how much they lag behind, since they dont have their own critical high tech companies who make some of the products we denied them like Visa,Mastercard etc) so they resort to using their Soviet era arms to show they are still relevant. :disagree:

He is doing this to increase his domestic popularity and keep his image.

Its not really hard to increase your domestic popularity when most of the country looks like its still in the 1980's, in the buildings/clothing sense and peoples mindstates, getting patriotic about pieces of land that have some people with shared lineage, I dont give a hoot about the yanks but I probably have alot of ancestry there, people defending Putins name when offending him, Putin belt buckles and tattoos, its just fucking weird.

The attention seeking child, hey big country look at me I got some really old bombers with outdated tech, big country looks across and just ignores, little country gets angry and does it again, big country still ignores because its laughable.

Why will we be scared? We(the west/U.S) still control/dominate the world in every aspect. So why will we be scared of Russia?lool
You should know that in an event of all out sanctions between us and Russia, do you think Russia will survive? No. we wmight suffer abit, but Russia will suffer even more believe me. The U.S/west can use its influence to coerce its allies and other Asian countries like South Korea and Japan to cut off relations/sanction Russia as well, thats without counting several countries in the world who are allied/partners of the West/U.S .
Russia might be left with only China and India, But that wont be anywhere enough for them to sustain themselves, since these two countries still lag behind technologically compared to us. The world's financial hub/centre is still largely base in the west/U.S. So with this we can basically bankrupt a country if we so want/desire.:agree: Just look at how many Chinese,Indian and other countries tech companies list in the U.S/west. So this shows how the worlds economic centre is still largely western dominated, so in an even of all out sanctions, we can ruin a country if we wish, Though we might be a little affected as well. but not nearly as much as others. We dont even need to fire a single shot tbh.:bounce:

Ehh...don't think so, you commit aggression and EU/US/Israel will be history.

And then we're going to burn that history.
