Russia to sell Tu-204 planes to Syria over US sanctions against Damascus

The government of Syria considers an opportunity to purchase six Tu-204 planes from Russia for Syrian Air airline, because the US government refuses to withdraw economic sanctions from Damascus, RIA Novosti reports.

The USA imposed embargo on the export of Boeing and Airbus airplanes to Syria. The nation originally intended to sign the purchase, rent and leasing contract with EADS (France-Germany) for 54 airplanes before 2028, including the delivery of eight aircraft in 2009.

"Buying aircraft is not as simple as buying a kilo of bread. It needs time," Yarub Badr, Syria's Transport Minister said. "We recently asked the Russian side to assign a single entity to negotiate the sale with Syrianair. The talks have to be direct, with no middle men or commissions," he added.

Washington introduced sanctions against Damascus in 2004 claiming that Syria was supporting extremist groups, occupying Lebanon, providing help to Iraqi resistance and developing weapons of mass destruction.

There are still serious political discrepancies between the sitting governments of the United States and Syria. Barack Obama extended the regime of sanctions which stipulated the ban on the export of all goods to Syria, except for food and medications.

Paris, among other European countries, supports the sale of aircraft to Syria, but Airbus requires the export license for the delivery of its products to Damascus because some parts of European planes are made in the USA.

EADS is developing a 100% euro model of Airbus to cater for "embargoed" countries. The development is principally aimed towards Iran but unilateral EU sanctions have turned such possibility really bleak.

Countries should stop buying Russian weapons, they do not honour their agreements.

But the biggest arms partner doesnt say the same.:azn::azn:

Russian arms are cheap, mean, among the best , comes with no strings attached and no diplomatic dramas..

Iran is having a big "diplomatic drama" with S-300 deliveries that were promised, repeatedly assured, but never delivered. Brazil found there there were strings attached to their SU-35 deal, when they wanted Russians to buy Embraer transports but Russia reneged on them in the end. Syria wanted to buy MiG-31s but that was stonewalled and eventually refused, to please Israel. And Algeria got used 2nd-hand aircraft after paying for brand-new ones. Perhaps the Russians were hoping the Algerians wouldn't be competent enough to notice. No such luck.

And India was having such severe difficulties obtaining spare parts for it's Russian fleet of aircraft, that it had to issue an international tender to see if any other country could manufacture and deliver those spares. I believe this tender is still active, with interest from Israel and former-USSR states. Crashes are common especially among the Indian-upgraded MiG-21 fleet, and even the SU-27 variants have started to crash numerous times, which is rather surprising given that twin-engined aircraft can still fly if either of the two engines can remain functioning.

It used to be that countries Uncle Sam wanted to meddle with had no other option but to buy their arms from the Russians. Now with the Russians trying to cozy up with the USA/NATO, the only other game in town is the Chinese. Even American sources say that the Chinese have the most rapidly progressing aeronautics industry around, the quality of their aircraft is dramatically advancing. Most people were shocked when the Chinese unveiled their 5th-Gen J-20, and then later on when it was found that it had flown with experimental Chinese engines. I don't think the future looks very good for the Russian aviation industry, their politics are alienating their market, and their lack of funds prevents them from even trying to maintain their lead on the Chinese, that they once used to enjoy.

Russia is a very unreliable country. They lie if they see there is some dollar in it for them. They have no honor whatsoever. You can only deal with them when you have a clear upper hand. Otherwise just dont bother.

That is not so. Syria does not have S-300 systems. And even S-300 is not an alien technology with self aware intelligence that guards a nation. All systems depend on humans for their optimum operation and even the oldest systems can be made useful if the commanders know what they are doing. The reason Syria did not stand a chance was because all these countries are just consumers of these systems and do not have any R&D to upgrade and think "around the systems" for optimum operation. Even if you have the best planes in the world but your pilots are not upto the task, it is all useless. Also one has not to forget that Russians are not reliable as they sell downgraded versions of their weapons to countries like Syria. This versions are called monkey models.

About the passenger planes such as T-204, I must also say, they are generally very good and have excellent safety records. All plane models crash and these crash rates are measured by hull loss in every 1 million hours of flight time. There is no scientific evidence that Russian planes have any higher statistically important crash rates. Even the notorious T-154, fares pretty well. The problem with countries using Russian planes is their low pilot quality and still lower maintenance records. Boeing and Airbus go into very detail programs for training the pilots and maintenance crew for their customers. This is not so with cheaper Russian planes.

Lets just wait and see how these planes will be for syria.

These planes have been in use since late 1980's and have a proven record. So they will be good, of course if Russians deliver them since they usually take the money and forget about delivery. Syrians have to continuously remind Russians about the planes. Just like Iran case. Iran had paid some money to Russians to get a factory and build these planes in Iran along side T-334. Russians kicked back and never delivered anything and cancelled T-334, which Iran was so interested to buy its design and manufacturing rights. Russians were more happy to let T-334 to go to dust bin of history than taking 3.5 billion dollars from Iran and transferring the technology.
