A first Russian Project 22800 (Karakurt-class) missile corvette, named Typhoon, is set to launch in November at the shipbuilding company Pella in St. Petersburg.

The new Russian Project 22800 (Karakurt-class) missile corvettes are currently under construction for the Russian Navy. Project 22800 was developed by Almaz Central Naval Design Bureau and it was first publicly presented in 2015.

The construction is carried out at the sites of the shipping company Pella in the Leningrad Region and in the Crimea. In total, the fleet plans to get 18 of these Karakurt-class missile corvettes.

According to the Russian Defence Ministry, a total of 18 Project 22800 Karakurt-Class corvettes are to be included in the Russian Navy’s Black Sea Fleet and Northern Fleet by 2022.

Small missile vessels project 22800 have a displacement of 800 tons and a speed of up to 30 knots.

According to the Russian Defence Ministry, the armament of the corvettes includes complexes of attack and anti-aircraft weapons, combat command and control systems, detection, target designation and communications. The primary armament of the corvettes will be cruise missiles fired from an eight-tube vertical launching system. Some source told that corvet was equipped with Kalibr-NK missiles. The Kalibr-NK missile can engage long-range targets within the distance of approximately 2,500km.
