Russia Shrugs Off Trump's Warning, Pounds Idlib Jihadists

Trump has Twitter-warned Russia not to back the oncoming Syrian army offensive on Idlib Jihadistan

The Russian Air Force has begun their largest bombing campaign of the year in the Idlib Governorate, a military source told Al-Masdar News this afternoon.

According to the source, at least ten Russian Sukhoi jets launched dozens of airstrikes over the southern and western parts of the Idlib Governorate.

The source said the Russian Air Force specifically targeted the Jisr Al-Shughour District, including the towns of Al-Shughour, Mahambel, Basnqoul, Zayzooun, Ziyarah, Jadariyah, Kafrdeen, Al-Sahn, Saraseef, and dozen others.

The source added that the Russian airstrikes numbered over 50 thus far.

With the large Russian bombardment, the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) long-awaited offensive is bound to start in the next few days.

MOSCOW, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Four Russian jets of the Hmeymim airbase in Syria bombed positions of Nusra Front in Idlib province on Tuesday, the Russian Defense Ministry said Wednesday.

Two Su-34 fighter-bombers struck a precise blow to a workshop where Nusra Front fighters were assembling attack drones and a warehouse of explosives for the drones, the ministry's spokesman Igor Konashenkov said in a statement.

A Su-35S fighter destroyed with high-precision ammunition a warehouse of portable air defense systems, Konashenkov said.

All the attacks were carried out "exclusively on the objects of terrorist groups identified and confirmed through several channels and far from populated areas," he said.

Also on Tuesday, Russia destroyed two drones launched by militants to attack the Hmeymim airbase, raising the number of downed drones to 47 in a month, Konashenkov said.

Idlib, a city in northwestern Syria controlled by "ultra-radical groups" as Russia calls, has a population of about 2.5 million and is strategically important as it borders Turkey.

It is close to the coastal province of Latakia, home of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, which also hosts the Russia-operated Hmeymim airbase.

The Syrian government army has been amassing forces and military gears around Idlib in recent weeks.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday spoke with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu by phone and agreed that Syria's possible offensive in Idlib is unacceptable.

Russia is conducting large-scale military drills in the Mediterranean on Sept. 1-8 involving more than 25 battleships and 30 warplanes.

. . .
Always admire Putin's decisiveness. How I wish Xi is as aggressive as Putin when it comes to foreign policy. Not much use to your 1-million strong military and advanced weaponry if your don't make use of them to defend your interests around the world.

.
with liberation of Idlib Syrian war will end. And American don't like Syrian civil war end. They want war in west Asia for ever.
Al-tanf area is full of ISIS members and supporters. Actually Americans create save land for those terrorists to attack Syrian citizens from there. Last month ISIS members from Al-Tanf area organized attack on Syrian citizens in Swieda province and got Syrian woman as slave and killed all of the men in East villages of Swieda province.
Americans must end ISIS protection in Al-Tanf area.
Idlib is full of Al-Qaeda members and American must end Al-Qaeda helping in Idlib as well.
They are same terrorists from whole of the world in Idlib which did 9/11 in NY.

Indeed, it is now a strategic necessity that China does not allow some factions of the Idlib terrorists to be saved by the US or run away from the area into their countries of origin.

Idlib operation Russia's greatest global public goods, because all the hardlined terrorists of the entire Syrian Civil War now have a chance to be eliminated and finished off once and for all.

There should be no humanitarian corridor, no negotiation, no exit clauses, but only one way ticket to the terrorists' fairy gods' wonderland. China should at least make sure that Russia is given enough international space to complete the global public goods project.

Properly mentioning the names of Jets. Is this standard.?

Some members paint the situation on the ground in Syria with a black and white brush like this, and this is contrary to facts.

Does it ever occur to you that who is responsible for destruction of Syria? Bashar al-Assad. A chunk of Syrian population began to protest against Assad's rule and called for his resign after torture of university students for expressing their views on a wall (grafitti).

FYI: https://www.pri.org/stories/2011-04-23/syria-how-it-all-began

Syrian Civil war commenced in 2011 when Assad ordered crackdown over mass protests against his rule across the country with firearms.

Assad was also sheltering elements in his country near Iraqi border who would establish ISIS movement with support of Iraqi Ba'athist elements in 2013.

FYI: https://defence.pk/pdf/threads/the-...di-became-leader-of-the-islamic-state.567850/

Civil war creates lawless and resource-scarse conditions in a region. Under these conditions, survival instincts take over and rationality takes a back seat. As ISIS movement drew recruits from various countries and spread in different sectors of Syria and Iraq, numerous Syrian and Iraqi citizens joined it for survival. However, ISIS movement threatened American interests in Iraq (refer to Ba'athist elements above) and paved way for American intervention in Syria accordingly (i.e. Operation Inherent Resolve). US have played a major role in defeating ISIS across Syria and Iraq by conducting thousands of precision strikes on their positions, and using YPG and Iraqi Security Forces to consolidate gains on the ground respectively.

To be fair, every foreign entity have acted against ISIS in Syria when it was a visible force on the ground: US, Iran and Russia respectively. However, this is not a conventional war. When Syrian and Iraqi members of ISIS lay down arms and are willing to return to normal lives, you let them.

Numerous cases of Russia allowing Syrian rebels to lay down their arms in exchange for assurances of safety.

Example 1: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2017...deal-agreed-syria-ghouta-170722215635284.html

Example 2: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-mideast-crisis-syria-idUSKBN1812BV

Al-Qaeda and ISIS boogeyman fit everywhere across Syria. Do you really think that regions under control of Assad regime and its allies (Iran and Russia) are absolutely clean from former members of Al-Qaeda Network and ISIS?

Please be realistic. Accusing US troops of harboring such elements is pure hypocrisy on your part.

As a nuetral observer, I would say that no entity gives a shit about the well-being of ordinary Syrians, be it Iran, Russia, US, Turkey and Assad regime. Numerous faces of devils in disguise.

Anyhow; Iranian days in Syria are numbered. In-fact, Iran should worry about its future because Iranian mullahs do not have their priorities straight: http://www.dailystar.com.lb/Busines...of-irans-worries-as-rial-continues-slide.ashx

Play the devil's game, and there will be repercussions.

A Year After Calling Idlib 'Al-Qaeda’s Largest Safe Haven Since 9/11' the US Govt Is Trying to Save it

Keep Idlib safe for al-Qaeda! -- current US policy

Whitney Webb

As the Syrian government and its allies prepare to begin a military offensive against the last rebel-held province in the country, top US government officials and even US President Donald Trump have recently urged Syria to refrain from “recklessly” attacking the Idlib province, warning that it could result in a high civilian death toll. These recent statements of US government officials have sought to portray Idlib as chiefly populated by civilians and benign opposition “rebels.”

Yet, just last year, one of the US government’s top counterterrorism officials involved in the country’s Syria and Iraq policy stated on video that, in contrast to current government statements, Idlib is dominated by none other than the Al Qaeda terrorist group and that the province should be a major focus of US counterterrorism policy given the threat that Idlib represents to global efforts to fight terrorism.

Speaking last July at a conference organized by the Middle East Institute, Brett McGurk – the US government’s Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL (Daesh, ISIS) – called Syria’s Idlib province “the largest Al Qaeda safe haven since 9/11 tied directly to Ayman al-Zawahiri [current leader of Al Qaeda].” He then immediately added that the Al Qaeda presence in Idlib was a “huge problem” and had been so “for some time.” McGurk later stated that the efforts by foreign governments, including the US, “to send in tens of thousands of tons of weapons and looking the other way as foreign fighters come into Syria may not have been the best approach. Al Qaeda has taken full advantage of it and Idlib now is a huge problem.”

McGurk’s characterization of Idlib as an “Al Qaeda safe haven” has also been reported on by the mainstream US press. For instance, last February, The Washington Post published an article that stated that Idlib, “the biggest surviving rebel stronghold in northern Syria,” was “falling under the control of Al Qaeda-linked extremists.” One of the rebels quoted in the Post article stated that Al-Qaeda-linked radicals “are controlling every aspect of life” in Idlib and that “Al-Qaeda ideology is spreading everywhere.”

That same article went on to report that most rebels have joined one of the two most powerful factions in Idlib: Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, a coalition formed by Syria’s Al Qaeda branch al-Nusra Front; or the “more moderate” Ahrar al-Sham, a coalition known for being a common battlefield ally of al-Nusra Front. The New York Times wrote in 2015 that Ahrar al-Sham membership included associates of Osama bin Laden.

However, recent statements made by Trump administration officials omit this key fact, despite the fact that the Al Qaeda presence and threat within the Idlib province remains unchanged from last year. In fact, since last year, Al Qaeda’s presence in Idlib has only grown, as Al Qaeda affiliates in other parts of Syria were evacuated to Idlib province as part of several deals negotiated with the Syrian Arab Army that resulted in the surrender of then-rebel-held territories to the Syrian government.

Unsurprisingly, US mainstream media outlets now echo the Trump administration on Idlib, despite their own past admissions that the province is dominated by Al Qaeda-linked terrorist groups. For instance, a New York Times article published this past Sunday opened by lamenting that the Syrian government offensive targeting Idlib presented a threat to “rebel fighters and their civilian supporters who rose up more than seven years ago demanding regime change,” noting only in the story’s 21st paragraph that these same “rebel fighters” are “affiliated with Al Qaeda.”

While it may seem striking that the Trump administration would spring to the defense of a known “Al Qaeda safe haven,” government officials have stated in recent months that the US’ objectives in Syria are no longer about fighting terrorism but about countering the “Iranian menace,” as National Security Adviser John Bolton stated in July. Thus, it seems that defending Al Qaeda has become par for the course given the Trump administration’s ultimate goal of targeting Iran, a country that has spent much of the past seven years fighting terrorists like ISIS and Al Qaeda in Syria.

While Syria seemed to have dropped from the Western media's radar over the past months as the Syrian Army and its Russian and Iranian allies made rapid gains, multiple huge developments this week have returned the war to center stage in Washington and the dangerous rhetoric of escalation.

In just the last 24 hours alone, we've learned:

•Trump has reportedly done a 180 shift, departing from his prior statements of "bring our troops home" made only months ago, and has approved "an indefinite military and diplomatic effort in Syria" according to a bombshell Washington Post report.
•Russia has put the US military on notice, telling American commanders that Russian and Syrian forces are prepared to attack _At Tanf — a key US garrison along the Syrian-Iraq border.
•A top US Syria policy representative says there's “lots of evidence” chemical weapons are being prepared by the Syrian Army for use in its impending Idlib ground assault.

Perhaps most alarming concerning all of the above is that the threatened US "response" and rhetoric over potential future use of chemical weapons in Idlib is dramatically escalating by the day.

This comes days after US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley gave a similar warning, while also claiming to somehow predict the future, and assuring the world that "Assad is guilty" before anything actually happens.

It appears that should Russia continue its ongoing bombing campaign of al-Qaeda held Idlib, and should the Syrian Army ground operation commence, we are in for a likely quick escalation, with some kind of "chemical provocation" claimed by insurgents facing imminent defeat in Idlib.

And according to Americans, Assad uses chemical weapons whenever his troops are gaining grounds and making breakthrough.

ONLY THE EXCEPTIONAL is able to forward such Twisted Logic! The THICK FACE approach! I just hope the Russians are steadfastly determined! The Axis is in desperation to save its terrorist squad in Idlib.
