Russia set to invite India to Checkmate fifth-generation fighter jet project

MOSCOW, February 7. /TASS/. The Russian delegation attending the Aero India 2023 international air show plans to discuss potential cooperation with India in creating fifth-generation aircraft, in particular, the Checkmate light tactical fighter jet, a source close to the state tech corporation Rostec told TASS on Tuesday.

"A delegation of representatives of our aircraft-building companies will attend the Aero India air show. We plan to discuss cooperation in fifth-generation aircraft. In particular, there is the intention to invite our Indian partners to join the Checkmate light tactical fighter project," the source said.

The Aero India 2023 international air show will run in Bangalore on February 13-17. The India air show is held once every two years. Russia is an active participant in the Indian air shows and featured over 200 military products at Aero India 2021.

Checkmate light tactical fighter​

Russia’s state tech corporation Rostec unveiled the latest domestic single-engine fighter dubbed Checkmate at the MAKS-2021 international air show in the suburban town of Zhukovsky outside Moscow. The new plane created by Rostec at its own initiative, is a derivative of the Su-57 fifth-generation fighter. The cutting-edge fighter’s foreign rollout was held at the Dubai Airshow 2021 in the United Arab Emirates.


A pilot batch of Checkmate fighter jets is expected to be produced in 2026.

The Checkmate incorporates the latest systems, including its open architecture configuration to meet the customer’s requirements and unique artificial intelligence technologies.

The new single-engine fighter is based on stealth technology and is outfitted with an inboard compartment for airborne air-to-air and air-to-surface armaments. The fighter will carry a payload of over seven tons and will be capable of striking up to six targets at a time.

I doubt we would take them up on their offer. We walked from PAK FA after having bankrolled and collaborated on the program due to cost over-runs and performance issues.

F35s is a very good 5th gen fighter only if the US uses them with all their data set components. Export models are dumbed down models and as always will come with strings attached.
Better to invest in our own project and partner with other nations.

I think the point is, how much is India willing to kill: Both the AMCA and the LTS is IMO unlikely and within the Checkmate project India will at best be a junior partner who pays.
As such it will be interesting to see, what Russia offers and India has in mind with its own projects … since there is not only the AMCA but also the TEDBF.

If Russia - and that's my estimation - only wants India to pay, then they should ignore it

Agree - India has crossed the inflection point and probably can do AMCA on her own now. For now the engine issue is resolved by using the GE engines.

If Russia offered complete deep and full tech transfer, design rights and license rights over something like the AL-41F etc then maybe worth it on the cost/reward ratio for India - but i dont see the Russians doing that and the old days of getting India to "pay" are gone - esp with the Americans stepping in and wanting to reduce India's dependency on Russia.

The Ukraine war has pretty much killed off any future that the Military industry complex that Russia had ... that realisation and desperation may force Russia to make uncomfortable decisions that were once thought unimaginable..

Chinese already has ws-13 engines available. Also Russia is broke and needs every penny it can get.

It isn't that broke that it can't break the JF-17's engine back if it is threatened by Pakistan in any way.

And if the WS-13 is ready and integrated and tested with the JF-17 then why isn't it on the Block 3? That hasn't even entered service yet.

Yet Pak continues to supply Ukraine every week and Russia still have not “blocked” rd-93s.

You dont know how International relations work. If that was the case Russia would have sanctioned other nations such as Turkey, Israel, who have provided far more resources to Ukraine. Russia sees Pak as a energy market of 220+ million people. Today pak doesn import much but that will change quick as Russia moves away from europe/west.

You Indians still cant get over your insecurities which include JF17 bombing your territories multiple times including in 2019 and just recently via Myanmar. Your defence industry has yet to produce anything of quality which Ukraine let alone any country would find useful.

Infact another major insecurity is that 80% of your military is still russian/soviet junk like tincans than catch fire even from matches. Get some burnol for yourself. I dont support paks military but I def support pak military helping our Ukrainians allies. Ukraine has been pakistans best europeans ally after Turkey helping us when no one else would.

Can Pakistan pay market rates for hydrocarbon purchases ?
