A Russian warship carrying "special cargo" will be dispatched toward Syria, a navy source said on Friday, as the Kremlin beefs up its presence in the region ahead of possible US strikes against the Damascus regime.

The large landing ship Nikolai Filchenkov will on Friday

leave the Ukrainian port city of Sevastopol for the Russian Black Sea port of Novorossiisk, from where it will head to Syria's coast, the Interfax news agency quoted a source from the Saint Petersburg-based central naval command as saying.

"The ship will make call in Novorossiisk, where it will take on board special cargo and set off for the designated area of its combat duty in the eastern Mediterranean," the source said.

The source did not specify the nature of the cargo.

Russia has kept a constant presence in the eastern Mediterranean during the Syrian crisis.

In recent days Russia has made steps to beef up its naval grouping in the region.

The Russian destroyer Smetlivy will soon join the group in the region as well as the destroyer Nastoichivy, Interfax has said.

The anti-submarine ship Admiral Panteleyev has already entered its zone of operation as the flagship of the current rotation of the Mediterranean grouping, a military source has told the news agency.

Already in place in the eastern Mediterranean are the frigate Neustrashimy, as well as the landing ships Alexander Shabalin, the Admiral Nevelsky and the Peresvet.

They are expected to be joined by the large landing ships Novocherkassk and Minsk and the missile cruiser Moskva. The reconnaissance ship Priazovye is also on its way to join the group.

The US already has a strong naval presence in the region and any US military action against Syria is widely expected to be launched from the sea.

I love how everyone these days discloses to the whole world. THERE IS A SURPRISE! GUESS!?

Intelligent people deny things even after their items are found and make up excuses in such a way that actually traps the victim.

Anyone thinking verbal/ hidden threats would have any effect on US is quite naive. You can expect such "diplomacy" from NK or Iran. Russia is a big boy now, Putin is a smart guy not emotionally driven as quickly as many of the hot heads around.

First of all, such news always comes with a lot of credibility issues. Secondly there is a reason "Intelligent" people are not called morons. That cargo/ship can easily be attacked by west but get Syrian govt blamed, as easy as how its blamed for the Chem attack, forcing Russia to rethink its support.

There are people who think smart as a part of their job. And there dumb ones on PDF, mostly known as fanboys.

I hope you wont want to be dumb fanboy and expect russians to have perfect reason to utter such statement. There was news that they supplied rockets to syria..followed by denial. This is not first time.

Russian threat to suppy weapon to syria is of course one of the reason cited by brits, as to why they wont supply weapon to FSA.(they might actually do)

Can you say with certainty that an orchestrated attack on that ship by US is not possible using rebels as pawns just how they have been supplied with arms so far?

Denial is nothing new is politics, just proves my earlier statement. Intelligent people will always deny, So thanks.

The assertion and denial are both part of same game. Rebels dont possess capability to attack a ship which will probably sail aong with others.

HA! Rebels didn't have the capability a few months ago to destroy tanks, helicopters and other sophisticated weaponry to slaughter until provided.

Go back to your crib as you really have no explanation but "Not gonna happen" theories, this game being played by Russia and US is beyond your understanding.

kindly tell us a realistic scenario in which rebels can attack a ship. Has it ever happened anywhere else?
How does destroying heli / tank suddenly make destroying a ship so easy... dont tell me they will get a ship of their own.. or a submarine :cheesy:

Ok, first lets go with moron friendly logic.

I'll explain you with a question. How did the ignorant, jobless, most of them not even high school graduate rebels get the knowledge, money to manufacture a sophisticated facility that produces anti-tank, anti-air weaponry?

They must be quite secretive, on one hand they have all these goodies on the other they intentionally portray them selves as stone age savages eating hearts and lungs of dead people.

How does one go from throwing rocks to shooting down helicopters? They should probably let Palestinians in on this one, over night PhDs.

Now lets go to a logic that may be hard for you to understand.

Someone supplied/ trained them. Someone can get them all the facilities, classified weaponry that we may not even know of to complete their mission. It didn't take much more than poor performance on flight certificates for the 9/11 hijackers to pass all kinds of sophisticated scans and tests to grab a superpower by the balls, I think you "may" be able to connect this with the phrase "where there's a will, there's a way".
