India will most probably get the upgraded S-400. It will have many features from S-500 which is capable of interception get ICBM'S and a longer range. It is also capable of tracking many more targets than its predecessor.

India will require atleast 13 regiments of a good.mix of S-400 and S-500.

There is a lot to sort out on the technical side and a lot of complex negotiations have to go on, the process only really began in late 2015, expecting anything concrete outside of a 36 month period is a bit optimistic IMO.

+ The Russians are good are making "offers" to India but subsequent progress always seems glacial.

6 billion will get us 6 full scale regiments (with 4 battallions each), there are also plans for another 6-7 full scale regiments for Make in India but that will happen later on. Also the S-400 is not being acqauiore defence of cities. Cities will be protected by home made PAD and AAD systems.

S-400 chats with Russia began already a few years back but didn't go through as we were interested in the next gen missiles, these are now on offer. Eitherway 6 regiments to start with is a significant number and keep in mind a battallion or a smaller fire unit can quite easily be airlifted to any location in the country with a few C-17s.

Not true buddy, S-400 discussion were happening as early as 2012 but that didn't happen, it was more of a technical review.

So was for F16, FA18SH, we can't consider those, Modi wanted he would have distanced himself from Russians without any hesitation, no one would have stopped him, his Israel trip is almost canceled now.
If he wanted to go with west but he is welcoming Russians & west with same hands, we can expect good relation like France with Canada too as they aren't Americans.

DAC already approved 5 regiments. MOD wants to procure 1-2 regiments directly from Russia and have the rest made in India under MII.

If they are signing for 5 regiments then there will be some options too, maybe another 2 or 3 regiments.

Total number of regiments will depend on what kind of technology India will get and how upgraded are these missiles.
