Russia’s K-152 Nerpa nuclear-powered attack submarine has been handed over to the Indian Navy, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported on Monday.

In line with the contract worth over $900 million, the Project 971 Shchuka-B (NATO: Akula II) class sub has been leased to India’s Navy for ten years. It will be renamed the INS Chakra.

The ceremony took place in the Far Eastern Primorye Territory. Russian submariners trained their Indian colleagues to steer the Nerpa in the Pacific Ocean.

The event was attended by Indian ambassador to Russia Ajai Malhotra, United Shipbuilding Corporation head Roman Trotsenko, Eastern Military District commander Admiral Konstantin Sidenko and other officials.

The submarine’s displacement is 8,140/12,770 tons. Its maximum speed is 30 knots, maximum operating depth, 600 m; its endurance is 100 days with a crew of 73. The vessel is armed with four 533mm torpedo tubes and four 650mm torpedo tubes.

India has become the sixth operator of nuclear submarines in the world, after the United States, Russia, France, Britain and China, though it previously leased another Russian submarine which was then returned.

Well the 3rd and 4th Arihant class are expected to carry upto 8 K4 Ballistic Missiles and weigh upto 8000 Tons full load

While INS Chakra will come with 24 Klub N Cruise Missiles and will still be the most capable Attack sub in the region
Though I really hope that we go ahead and lease the second Akula II sub in 2014
coz it would really shut up all those Pakistanis Boasting about the superiority of there 3 Augusta 90B subs against the 14 Kilo and Type 209 subs of IN

.
^ well we are going to lease second AKULA.

They will serve for 10 years and by that time our indigenous SSNs will be ready or we can lease Akulas again.

Well you are right
Akula II will serve till 2022 and first Indian SSN is expected to enter service in 2022 unless there is any delay
But Indian SSNs will still be less capable than Akula II , being able to carry only 18 Cruise Missiles and 20 Torpedoes/Mines compared to Nerpa which can carry 28 Cruise Missiles and 30 Torpedoes/mines

Frankly I hope that we ask the Russians to extend the lease by another 5-10 yrs in yr 2022 so that our SSNs are fully inducted and our crews are trained on them

.
it's not about number of missile if it can carry 10 missiles the Indian Sub will be night mare, what more important for me how silent it will be with what type of sonar system. What I am hoping a mix of Russian and European (my wish German) under project 751 (with TOT) as Russian are master of making of quite sub and with German Sonar suit it will deadly.

Well , Formally Russia Had Handed over the sub to India on 31st dec 2011
But what the article means i that the Indian crew which was supposed to leave for Russia in mid Jan 2012 , has now taken the control of the sub and will be bringing it back after final exercise with the russian crew

. . .
Is anyone here has anyidea abt sindhurakshak diseal sub which is being upgraded in russia i heard some were that russia will deliverd that to in 2012 ? what kinda upgrade ?

.
Despite cost overruns, problems with spares, time overruns, etc.....

Russia is still the only country that would do this for India.

For that India is thankful.

Actually INS SindhuRakshak was sent to Zvezdochka shipyard in Russia in August 2010, for an overhaul and upgrade
The Upgrade will include an improvement to the internal electronic subsystems which would bring it to the level of yr 2005 spec P-636 Kilo
add to that , it will also carry a hydro acoustical USHUS complex and the CCS-MK radio communications system

Other improvements include additional weapon systems like
9M36 Strela-3 (SA-N-8) SAM launcher to take out ASW Helis
Klub-S (3M-54E) omni role Cruise Missiles with 300 Km range
Type 53-65 passive wake homing torpedo
Type 71/76 anti-submarine, active-passive homing torpedo
DM-1 mines
After upgrades the sub will be able to carry upto 24 Mines/Torpedoes and 6 Klub S Cruise Missiles

The sub will be Handed back to Indian Navy in July 2012 and will then serve till yr 2027

Also INS SindhuKirti currently undergoing MLU in Vizag is expected to be Handed over to the Indian Navy by the end of this yr or early next yr .

The Last Kilo class Sub INS SindhuShastra inducted in yr 2000 , is expected to go in for MLU between 2013-15 , after the completion of MLU of INS SindhuKirti
